• MicroStation on a Mac!

Is anyone else like me?  A fan of the Apple Mac but stuck in a professional environment that is effectively Windows-only?

Still, I did not let that stop me from purchasing this not too long ago:

    Apple 15 inch MacBook Pro

I've had it for a few months now, it's a great machine, and I thoroughly enjoy it.  I rather like Windows - even Vista is okay - but I admittedly much prefer OS X and Apple's elegant hardware, even if the bang…

  • Ranting and Raving...

This post will be short, because it doesn't have anything substantive to say.

My previous post does, though, and I freely admit I want more folks to read it.  I want their take on it.  So I am being sneaky, underhanded, or perhaps just plain annnoying (take your pick) and publishing this post to bump my blog back to the main page for a day or so.  I never expected to do this, but neither I did think I'd have a topic…

  • RIP, BE Conference

For those who have not heard, BE Conference is, as of this year, changing to become "Be Connected".  You can read more about the changes here.  A short way to summarize it is that instead of holding the yearly BE conference, an online seminar called "Be Connected" will offer solution best practices for several months each year.  There are several advantages noted for this:

    • It saves travel costs…
  • DWG Is At It Again...

    Yep, it happened again.

In 1999, AutoCAD 2000 was released and brought with a new DWG format.  This format held for four years at least.

In 2003, AutoCAD 2004 was released, and brought with it a new DWG format.

In 2006, AutoCAD 2007 was released, and brought with it a new DWG format.

In 2009, AutoCAD 2010 is about to be released and is bringing with it... yep, you guessed it.  Yet a newer  DWG format…

  • The Death of Drafting - Model Based Design

Way back in the day, back before the Internet, back before some folks on the Bentley boards were even born, the term CADD was making itself known, promising less paper, less time, less stress, and overall better design.

    Sure, sure.

Anyway, as of 1980 or so it was quickly becoming apparent that the days of the drafting board were bound to end, so superior was the new CADD system. One had to adapt - learn…

  • Irony...

Okay, now it's been another three months since my last post.  My, my, I'm prolific on this blog.  At this rate, I'll be lucky to hit ten posts in a year!

2008 has come and gone, V8i has been released, the economy has tanked, and in less than two weeks we will have a new President.  As one of many who work in the infrastructure maketplace, I've wondered: how have your companies been affected?  Some fields, like Land…

  • It's Been Such A Long Time... Athens?

    ...and my apologies to Boston.

It's been, let's see... one, two, almost three months since I last posted.  Hmm.... gotta do better on that one, right?  Nobody's perfect.  I suppose I shouldn't keep all three of you waiting so long with baited breath.

Yeah, sure.  But in all seriousness, Bentley is keeping a lot of users waiting, too.  We've heard a lot about Athens and for quite some time.  Heck, I remember seeing…

  • An Incredible Autodesk/Bentley Agreement!

If you haven't heard, Bentley and Autodesk actually agreed on something :-)

OK, I had to say that.  In all seriousness, July 8 will be remembered by all kinds of AEC design professionals as a landmark day.  That's the day Autodesk and Bentley announced an agreement to exchange software libraries with one another.  To say interoperability between AutoCAD and MicroStation just got a whole lot better is an undrestatement…

  • Future Thoughts From BEs Past and Present...

"We are a serial acquirer, and intend to continue acquiring".

-Keith Bentley, at the 2005 BE Conference

    Sorry, Keith, I couldn't resist...  :-)

If my memory is recalling correctly (which unfortunately, always seems an appropriate question to ask), it was at BE 2005 that Bentley's CTO spoke those words, and he wasn't kidding.  Look at all the companies that have been taken into the Bentley camp…

  • Video Card Visions of Grandeur

I am a geek.  This is self-evident from my postings - well, all three iof them if you count this one.  Just trust me.  Postings aside, you really know I'm a geek if you have seen me in person and know what I look like, as several folks at the recent BE Conference who met me could tell you.  Like a lot of engineers, though, I got my start and had an interest in an AEC profession in large part due to my geekiness.  Having such proclivities…

  • ACADPAN, Anyone?

OK, I had to make a plug for this MDL for those of us unfortunate enough to not be on XM yet.

One of the usability enhancements on XM is the middle-mouse button pan, along with the use of DirectX in the display subsystem.  All that technospeak means when you press and hold the middle mouse button, then drag, you can smoothly scroll along in your drawing, just like that "other" CAD program, Auto-

  • First Post! BE 2008, Too!

    Greetings!

Welcome to the first of my many ramblings on my BE Community blog!  Here I will discuss many a thing related to Bentley's products (especially MicroStation), the work we do, tips & tricks, rants, and so on.  I might even mention that "other", competing product from time to time.  I won't name names, but its initials are AutoCAD.

I must warn you, though - I am a geek and an engineer…
