A revit question

Can any version of MicroStation (not Architecture) import or reference in a revit model?
Parents
  • Stuart -

Check out http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Promo/Revit/i-model.htm for the Revit plug-in. It allows you to produce a read only DGN file from Revit that includes component level business information (material information etc.) that can be referenced like any other DGN.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike [Bentley]

  • The revit plugin works with revit (i.e. you need to have revit installed)
You export a dgn from revit rather than import a rvt into microstation.
You should be able to install a trial/demo version of revit (I'm reasonably certain that when it reverts to a demo version after the trial period you should still be able to export out)

I just installed it the other day & the plugin seemed to work quite well.

The only query I have (if somebody from Bentley is listening) - is there a way mapping families/parts ( on the revit defined families/classes (or whatever they're called)) to the incoming geometry or running a script after you've created the dgn?

  • Shawn,

Thanks for your response and you are no doubt right.

My problem is that we don't work in a mixed Architecture-Revit environment. We don't have Revit, which means that I would have to ask Clients/Consultants to install another suppliers piece of software onto their system just so that we could use their information. Why would they want to do that? Their IT department may restrict the installation of non approved programs.

I was trying to get to a solution from the other way round. We can import/reference Sketchup files, so i was thinking, why not Revit.

I guess by the lack of Bentley imput into this thread that this is not going to happen. Oh well!

  • Stuart:  I agree, I am hoping my speculation on what I think is the situation will spur someone with a Bentley business card AND has relative information can discuss the situation.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

I certainly see your point about not wanting to install additional programs on top of Revit (nor having it installed at all!)... but regardless, we are really limited to accessing Revit data through the AutoDesk API since the Revit file format is proprietary.   It would be great if MicroStation and/or Bentley Architecture could natively open .rvt files, but even Autodesk Navisworks cannot do this (for the same reason).

We'll continue to monitor this, and may re-visit it at some point in the future.

    Thanks,

  • In addition Autocad and 3DS cannot import Revit files either. Designers use these products use in conjunction with Revit for 2D and visualization work respectively and always require the export to DWG from Revit - no RVT import feature in Autocad or 3DS or any other software that I can find. Revit can export to DWG which does not require a plug in - so no IT restrictions to deal with. Plugin only required when you need the additional data attributes - which makes sense as the data needs to be captured at source. So if its vector data that's required - export to DWG - problem solved.
  • hi,

has anyone here managed to use ism from bentley structural - Revit??? i have managed to transfer the geometry but the mapping is very confusing and not working properly??? can anyone give me advise on how to use the mapping editor????

    cheers
