Delete unused levels when remapping
Bentley's Dan Abney offered the following titbid on the v8.general newsgroup: The configuration variable MS_V7TOV8_DELETE_UNUSED_LEVELS also controls the deleting of unused levels when remapping. Set this varialbe to 0 to prevent unused levels from remaining when remapping V7 data with a CSV file.

Zoom to selected elements

This keyin script was posted to v8.general by Truels Wissneth and allows you to zoom in on elements that are in a selection set.

set displayset on;selview 1;displayset set selection;fit all;point ab;displayset clear;update view extended
Stick it on a function key and you're all set!

If you prefer to have the elements released from the selection set after the zoom operation, simple append choose none on the end of the key-in string.

Originally titled The Power of Keyins - Part 2 and published in the July 2000 issue of the MicroStation Manager Magazine, this tutorial covers how to create script files to streamline your workflows.

The ability to string keyins together is often referred to as a keyin script or action string. Whatever terminology you use, it's all a fairly easy to understand. In addition, by understanding the various options and components of action strings, you'lll be able to create very powerful scipts to streamline your workflow and minimize repetitive tasks. Let's get started!

Action Strings
Whatever MicroStation does when you activate a tool, menu item or function key can be referred to as an Action String. In other words, there is always some kind of keyin that executes a set of instructions when one of these items is selected. A great example of an action string is the F8 function key which toggles the display of construction elements on or off with this keyin: set construct toggle; selview all; update all where...

set construct toggle Is the actual command to turn the construction elements on or off.
selview all Instructs MicroStation to apply the keyin to all views.
update all Updates all the views.

Action Types
There are a variety of action types associated with tools, view controls, menu items and function keys. Note that some of these pre-date the current version of MicroStation and are shown with a (*).

Action Type	Syntax	Description
Command Entry Keyin	E,[keyin]	Whatever keyin is specified, it is always activated regardless of the state of the current tool.
Terminated Keyin	T,[keyin]	A terminated keyin is one that prompts the user for additional information such as the radius of a circle, text, or an answer to a yes/no question.
Unterminated Key-in	K,[keyin]	An un-terminated string of characters waits for the user to finish the string.
Print Message	M,ER[message]	Prints the message on the left side of the status bar.
	M,ST[message]	Prints the message on the right side of the status bar in MicroStation /J and in the Message Center in MicroStation V8.
	M,CF[message]	Prints the message as the left side a MicroStation prompt.
	M,PR[message]	Prints the message as the right side of a MicroStation prompt.
Place Active Cell - Absolute	C,[cellname]	Sets the Active Cell to the specified cellname and activates the Place Cell Absolute.
Place Active Cell - Relative	R,[cellname]	Sets the Active Cell to the specified cellname and activates the Place Cell Relative keyin.
Tutorial (*)	D,[tutorial]	Activates the specified tutorial.
User command (*)	U,[ucm_num]	Activates user command defined in the user command index file for [ucm_num]
Primitive (*)	P,[primitive]	Activates keyin by its IGDS primitive name
(*) MicroStation Pre-V8

A couple of things to point out with Action Types:
If no type is specified, then MicroStation assumes that it will be a command entry keyin (E).

For some terrific examples of action strings, take a look at the sample tablet menu in this file: ...\workspace\system\menus\dgn\v8menu.dgn. You'll want to navigate to the Command model and view the Command Text level.

Action Type Options
In addition to the Action Types, there are several options which can be used following the E, T or K action types. These options can be positioned anywhere in a multiple action string and must be followed with a semi-colon.

Option	Description
/	A forward slash will cause MicroStation to wait for user input such as entering a value.
/d	Causes MicroStation to wait for a data point.
/k	Makes MicroStation wait for a keyin
%	This is the same as the forward slash except that MicroStation won't display its normal prompts.

Stringing Multiple Keyins Together
There are two ways of stringing keyins together. The first is to simply keyin them all in on one line and separate each keyin with a semi-colon. This is typically referred to as an action string. The other is to use a script file which is described below. Seriously, that's all there is to it.
Take this for example, this action string sets up your attributes and then selects the correct drawing tool.
CO=3;LV=12;LC=2;WT=4;PLACE SMARTLINE

Where:
CO=3 Sets the Active Colour to number 3
LV=12 Sets the Active Level to 12
LC=2 Sets the Active Line Style to 2
WT=4 Sets the Active Weight to 4
PLACE SMARTLINE Activates the Place Smartline tool

And this example shows the use of the various action types. After setting up the active attributes, it places a circle with a 12 inch radius at a user-defined point:
CO=7;LV=23;LC=0;WT=1;E,Place Circle Radius;T,12;M,Place Manhole;%d;null

Where:
CO=7 Sets the Active Colour to number 7
LV=23 Sets the Active Level to 23
LC=0 Sets the Active Line Style to 0
WT=1 Sets the Active Weight to 1
E,Place Circle radius A command keyin which activates the Place Circle Radius tool
T,12 A terminated keyin that enters a radius of 12
M,Place Manhole Displays a message in the status bar which reads “Place Manhole”
%d MicroStation waits for a data point which defines the location of the manhole.
NULL After the arc has been placed, MicroStation executes the NULL key-in so that no tool or view control is active.

Script Files
Simply put, a script file is a list of MicroStation keyins stored in an external text file such as the following two examples. Note that in this case, you can enter each keyin on a separate line rather than stringing them all together on one line as described above.

Script files can be executed a number of different ways:

Run from the key-in window by keying in @script_file. For example, the keyin: @c:/temp/my_commands.txt will immediatly kick off the list of MicroStation commands found in the file c:\temp\my_commands.txt. Note, be certain to include the full path if the file is not in the current working directory.

Run from a function key by simply editing a function key to execute the keyin: @script_file as described above.

Run the script file at the startup of MircroStation by appending the -s[script_file] command line switch as shown below.

Finally, you can run a script against multiple files by utilizing MicroStation V8's Batch Process Utility. This utility lets your create and run a script that can be executed on either individual files or entire directories full of files. In this case, the script file is referred to as a command file...All in all it's just the same thing.

Whatever your need is for stringing multiple keyins together, there's no doubt that utilizing script files will allow you to improve upon your workflows. Have fun!

In MicroStation V8 XM Edition SELECT Update #1 you can use the enhancements made to the Element Info dialog to fit selected elements to the view. Just set the Browse Mode to Model, located on of the selected elements, issue a right click and select Fit To View from the pop-up menu. Since you must locate at least one highlighted element from a potentially huge element list, this workflow is better suited to files with fewer elements. Related Tip: Zoom In On Selected Elements

It even has a change case tool! Once you've tried this set of tools, you'll wonder how you worked without them all these years!

Note: This version does not support level names. All placement tools are based on level numbers 1-63.

The input focus order vs AccuDraw, Tool Settings and Keyin Window

In MicroStation XM / V8i

Workspace > Preferences > Position Mapping > Use Position Mapping is turned ON

Regardless of where the focus is, you can move it to the Key-in window with F9
Regardless of where the focus is, move it to the tool settings by pressing F10
Regardless of where the focus is, move it to AccuDraw by pressing the F11.
Finally, if the focus is at Home, you can move it to AccuDraw by pressing the space bar.

Workspace > Preferences > Position Mapping > Use Position Mapping is turned OFF

Move the input focus between AccuDraw, the tool settings dialog and the key-in window by pressing the ESC key.
Once it gets to the Key-in window it'll get stuck, so just press SHIFT+ESC to go in reverse.

In MicroStation XM, annotation scale was extended to cells, meaning that the size of a cell is determined by the Drawing Scale of the model they are placed in. Let's take a closer look by using MicroStation V8i.

Ensure that the cell model has been enabled to be placed as an annotation cell. This can be done by opening the cell library, navigating to the Models dialog and simply ticking on the Is Annotation Cell column.

Set the Desired Drawing scale of the active model by navigating to Settings > Drawing Scale. Also ensure that the Annotation Scale lock is enabled as shown. When this lock is on, the drawing scale will be applied to to a variety of elements including annotation cells.

Attach the cell library to the file, and either activate the desired cell by a double-click or use the Place Active Cell tool. Place the cell on your drawing. To test if the annotation scale is being applied to the cells, change the drawing scale as shown below. In this case, the well symbols, text and pipeline symbols are scaled accordingly.

Wiki Page: Print the contents of a cell library

MicroStation V8i makes it simple to plot the contents of a cell library. Just open the cell library as the active file and choose Place Cell Index from the Cells task. Tweak the settings and enter a data point on the view. MicroStation will build a convenient print-ready grid. Since this grid is composed of references to the cell models, it will always be current!

To plot the contents of a V7 cell library, try CellUtil that came from Snutter.

To restore the dilaog, select the file from the MicroStation Manager, and choose Options. From the DWG Open Options dialog, choose Advanced > Display Units Alert and turn on Unspecified Design Center Units.

Contributed by Karl Peterson, this tutorial shows you how to split blocks of text by using a fence.

NOTE: The following workflow does not work in MicroStation V8i.

Let's suppose that you've imported a rather large amount of text and now need to split or rearrange the data accomodate placement on your drawing. What do you do? Well, this simple little workflow works like a charm!

Below is an image showing the text node that needs to be split into two sections.

Place a fence around the portion you need to move and set the mode to clip.

Select the Move Element tool, adjust the settings and follow the prompts.

In the clip below, you can see the fence being placed around the bottom half of the text node followed by the activation of Move Element command. The next thing that happens is simple. In response to the prompt which reads: Enter first point, I snap to the left-center of the first line of text within the fence. This is the point I want to move from.

The next prompt is Enter point to define distance and direction, which is the same thing as saying Enter a datapoint for the new location. Since I want the bottom half to be lined up with the top half, I reposition AccuDraws compass to the left-center of the top line of text. This is done by snapping to the location and pressing O.

I then move my curser along AccuDraw's x-axis, keyin a value of 50 and accept the whole lot with a datapoint.

As you can see for yourself, the final result is that the fenced-in text is postioned exactly where needed.

It's also important to note, that MicroStation will drop the original text node so that you'll be left with individual lines of text. Although this shouldn't be a problem, it may be undesirable for some. (With thanks to Matt Colon for pointing this out.)

The setting called called Treat Attachment as Element for Manipulation allows you to use the normal element manipulation tools on your references. You can toggle this switch as you attach the reference, or via the reference dialog. For those of you experimenting with MicroStation V8 XM Edition, you might find this article/tutorial of interest. Authored by Bentley’s Tim Hickman it’ll get you started on importing the content from your old ustn.m01 files into MicroStation V8 XM Edition. Tim also touches on migrating data from any stg files you may have. Note that this article is based on the version 08.09.02.12.

Preparation:
Let’s get started! Create an interface folder and place a copy of your V8 ustn.m01 into it.
Create a new file in your dgnlib folder that will be used to house the imported interface components. For example: MyUserInterface.dgnlib.
Ensure that MS_DGNLIBLIST is pointing to this file dgnlib file.
Open this new file and go to Workspace > Customize.
Navigate to the Tools tab and you should notice the MicroStation is indeed reading the tools and tool boxes from the old M01 file.

Tool Boxes:
For purposes of this article, my M01 contains this little tool box:

Navigate to Application Tools > MicroStation as shown below and notice that the tool boxes have been added from the M01 to MicroStation.

You now need to copy them from Application Tools > MicroStation to User Tasks.
On the left side, ensure that you’ve selected the tool box you want to migrate. Do a right click and select Copy. On the right side, expand User Tasks, highlight your dgnlib file, do a right click and select Paste. It can’t get any easier than that!

Since tool boxes now become tasks, you can verify that it’s been added correctly by noting the changes to the Task Navigation tool bar.

Menu Items:
Customized menu items from your M01 file are handled a little differently. In this article, we’ll look at importing this little menu bar from the M01 file to the dgnlib.

Navigate to Workspace > Customize and go to the Tools tab. From there ensure that you’ve selected Menu from the picklist on the right side and expand Main Menu.
In doing so, notice the the custom menu items from the M01 are automatically being read and loaded into the Main Menu. MicroStation also displays M01 menu items with an italic font.

At this time you copy the menu item(s) by simply doing a right click and selecting Copy. Of course, you’ll then want to highlight the Main Menu and issue a paste.

Once your tool boxes and menu items have been copied (imported) into your dgnlib, you can delete the M01 file and tweak menu items as needed. Although this workflow may seem a bit redundant, it’s important to recognize that the menu items (and tool boxes) will not be available once the M01file is removed from the interface folder. Copying/importing these items into the dgnlib will make them available to your users via MS_DGNLIBLIST.

NOTE: The following is snipped from Help:

There are several capabilities available, should you need to change the default display of menus. To change the default settings, add any of the following capabilities to either your user configuration file (UCF) or your project configuration file (PCF):

_USTN_CAPABILITY < +CAPABILITY_UI_LOADFROMACTIVEFILE Used if you want to have access to the features on the Tools tab while working in a DGN file that is not specified by the configuration variables listed above. If this capability is set, you will see the custom tools, tasks, and menus from the open DGN file in addition to those in the specified DGN libraries.

_USTN_CAPABILITY < +CAPABILITY_UI_IGNOREMENUSFROMDGNLIBS Used if you want to hide all menu customizations in the DGN libraries specified by the configuration variables listed above.

USTN_CAPABILITY <+CAPABILITY_UI_IGNOREMENUSFROMRSCMODFILE Used if you want to hide all menu customizations that were loaded from a user interface modification file. This capability takes effect only if the CAPABILITY_UI_IGNOREMENUSFROMDGNLIBS function is NOT set.

Settings Manager:
If you were using the Settings Manager in V8 or MS/J and wish to incorporate this into the tools, templates and tasks then you will need to do the following:

Click on the Templates tab, go to File > Import > From Settings Manager, browse to your stg file and select it.

MicroStation will import the items and you’ll see them displayed as a list of templates as well as a list of User Tools.

A reminder at this point is that anything we are currently doing is being placed in the active file – so these templates, tools, and tasks that came from the STG file are in the active file and not in any kind of resource file be it M01 or STG.

To recap, you should now have the contents of the old M01 and the STG files in the open dgnlib file. If you have defined MS_DGNLIBLIST to include this design file and if the workspace is shared among your users, they will be able to use the imported tools, tasks and templates.

Explore the file:
Download, open and explore 220_Points.dgn. In this 3D file you'll notice a model called Points that contains zero-length lines representing the peaks and valleys of a surface or ground terrain. Although these points are supplied with this tutorial, you can easily create your own if you have design software that can export DTM data to an XYZ text file. Once you have a text file, you can import the data into a design file by using the Import Coordinates tool from the XYZ Text toolbox.

Create the DTM:
To create a triangluated network of these points, follow these very easy steps:

If desired, create a new level - you might want to call it DTM for Digital Terrain Model.
Make this your active level, and set the active colour to 0.
Put all the points in a selection set, this can easily be done by using CTRL+A.

Navigate to the Create Meshes toolbox and choose Mesh From Points.

In the tool settings box, enable Expand to Rectangle and enter a datapoint to process.

To clearly see what the Expand to Rectangle button does, delete the resulting mesh element, and regenerate the triangles with that option turned off.

The difference is obvious:

Adjust the global lighting:
At this time the mesh is ready to be rendered 'as is' or you can drape an aerial over it which I'll explain in the following pages. In the meantime, let's just render the triangles to get a better idea of what the terrain looks like.

Before proceeding, ensure that you have generated the mesh without the bounding rectangle as explained above. You'll also want to turn off the elevation points since they are no longer needed.

In order to get a better rendering from this particular model, we'll first adjust the global lighting.

Choose Light Manager from the Lights toolbox.

Enable Ambient, Flashbulb and Solar and adjust the intensity as desired.

Render the surface:
Choose Smooth from the View Display Mode list as shown:

The brightness of the scene can be adjusted via the Adjust View Brightness control as shown:

Attach Image:
The next step in this tutorial is to drape an aerial photo over the resulting digital terrain model. However, before we do that, let's take a look at the aerial by simply attaching it via the Raster Manager.

From the Raster Manager, select File > Attach and select 220_Image.jpg. This image is georeferenced, so be sure to turn off Place Interactivly from the attach dialog.

The following graphic shows the image attached in the Top view. Note that the mesh has been turned off for clarity.

To remove the black collar around the image, right-click the image entry in the Raster Manager and select Transparency from the popup menu.

Enable the Transparent option and choose colour 0 to be 100% transparent.

Set the rendering mode of the isometric view to Wireframe by using the View Display Mode tool along the top of the view.

Image Draping:

The following blurb is snipped from MicroStation Help:

Image Draping is an extension to the MicroStation rendering feature. The draping function is based on a MicroStation rendering feature called Procedural Materials, which allows the application of a specific behavior to the raster image.

This image can be draped over a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) or any 3D object using the DCDRAPE.PAL Procedural Material. In the case of aerial photos or satellite images, the DTM should be used. By using the draping feature, Raster Manager seamlessly integrates any image in the rendering process in combination with 3D elements. It also supports lighting effects, shadows, fog effects, fly through, animations, etc.

Bentley Descartes is no longer required to drape rasters over digital elevation models.

The steps required to drape an image in MicroStation V8i are as follows and are described in detail below.

Choose the Apply Material tool.
Open the dcdrape.pal material palette.
Assign the dcdrape material to the mesh.
Enable the Draping option in the Raster Manager.
Render the view to Smooth.

Let's do it!

Navigate to the Materials task and choose Apply Material.

From the Assign Material dialog, choose Open Palette and select dcdrape.pal.

From the Assign Material dialog, choose Assign by Level / Color.

In the isometric view, select the mesh element and accept with a datapoint to assign the material. If you repeat this step, notice that you'll get a message indicating that the material is already assigned.

In the Raster Manager, ensure that the Draping column is displayed. This can be verified by right-clicking on any column name and choosing Draping from the pop-up menu as shown below. Then ensure that the draping option for the attached image is enabled.

Finally, adjust the view display mode to Smooth and the image will be draped over the mesh.

To publish this model in a shareable format, print to a 3D PDF.
