As the new Academic year gains momentum, I am pleased to confirm that Bentley will co-sponsor the Student Steel Bridge Competition for a fourth year.
This competition is a fun and practical application of students’ engineering education. It tests their skills in steel design, fabrication, scheduling, and management, while also providing valuable experience working as part of a design team.
Along with our continuing financial support of the National competition, Bentley’s Be Careers Network is pleased to once again offer participating ASCE student chapter steel bridge teams the following:
Free software (STAAD.Pro V8i and Structural Modeler V8i) for the duration of the 2012 competition.
Supporting tutorial materials (dataset, document & accompanying videos) to help use the software to design, analyze and document your steel bridge. (Last year’s tutorial, videos, and dataset proved so popular that we are providing them again! As you know, SSBC rules have changed for the 2012 competition. Please keep in mind 2012 parameters when following the tutorial, which serves as a general guide for using the software.)
The tutorial materials are available here, and provide a useful guide for anyone interested in an example of the integration of STAAD.Pro V8i and Bentley Structural V8i for bridge design, analysis and documentation:
Bentley Streaming Video1024 x 732 resolution (opens in Windows Media Player)
Participating ASCE student chapters should contact us at becareers@bentley.com to request the disc with software and license (if you haven’t already—we have received many enthusiastic inquiries from steel bridge teams).
Please provide your School Name, Faculty Advisor & Steel Bridge team Captain's name, and full Shipping Address on campus.
Please note: if your school already subscribes to the Academic SELECT program, then your student team already has access to this software, via STUDENTserver!
The 2011 finals at Texas A&M University last May were exciting, as usual, and I look forward to meeting the finalists at the 2012 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at Clemson University in May 2012.
Best of luck to all the participating teams!
