Splitting up large .tin files

In one of the posted webinars "Designer Collaboration" to the FDOT ECSO site, there was mention about splitting up larger .tin files.

What is a recommended method for doing this?

  • Using GEOPAK DTM Tools:

    1.Open the GDTMRD01.dgn file

    2. Create a selection set of all the elements and  drop complex elements on all the triangles displayed in that file.

    2. Create a smaller selection set and Use the Extract Graphics, binary, create, graphic triangle, extraction , selection set.

    4. Use build triangle and select the dat file created above, set the disslove option to side and use maximum triangle length in the file.

    5. Use the Load>DTM Features command to display(only) the triangles from the new tin into the design file to verify.

Compare the Original TIN file to the new TIN in file size also.  There will be a significant difference.  Try to stay under 10MB, ideally 5-7 MB.
