Create Surface Issues

For the most part, the create surface works pretty well, but I have a rather large surface made up of many corridors. I get a few sections that I can't seem to resolve.

I get a few areas like this where the triangles dont seem to want to connect properly. I have confirmed that they look just fine in Roadway Designer.

Same kind of deal here. Seems like the roadway portion should look similar to the median part.

Those long triangles arent supposed to be there. The road ties down along the line just prior to the long trianges, but for some reason, it seems to need to connect all the way across.

Also, here are my Create Surface Settings

Thanks for your help.

  • I see the issue with the long triangles... when you use Add Exterior Boundary , use Display Features Lines in a 3D file or the Exterior boundary is not created in the DTM.

I would need to see the file to diagnose the other issue.   In RD Tools Options>Include Critrical Sections , do you have  Exterior Control Points checked?

  • I wasnt exactly sure what Add Exterior Boundary meant. So it seems like you are saying I need to create the surface first, then create feature lines in the 3d file, store them as plan graphics as a specific style, and then select that style for my exterior boundary? How do I go about creating that feature line again?

I do not have Exterior Control Points checked. Should I have that checked? I only have Horizontal Cardinal Points and under Display, Reference Graphics.

    Thanks

  • Yes,

    Open the AMGMRD01 file:

    1. Open RD Create Surface dialog

    2. Check the Add Exterior Boundary and the Display in Plan View: Features boxes .

    3. While your at it , check Components also.

This will properly add the exterior boundary to the TIN and DTM file. .. as I understand it.

  • In your Surface Tools, View Surface, then View Surface Perimeter, The Perimeter should highlight in white.
You must then Import this surface from Graphics.
Then go to File, Import, Surface; A dialog box comes up.
Your Surface name, Whatever it is. FS
Load From- drop down box  use single element
    Elevations – use element elevations
    Go down to features.
Seed Name Ex_Boundary – Exterior  (you have to type this is in)
Feature Style Ex_Boundary – Exterior  from drop down box
Point Type is  Exterior   from drop down box
    Click apply
Identify the exterior Boundary line.  It will show up in purple, then accept.

It now becomes part of your Surface.

If you plan on adding to your surface later then you must re-do your surface without the perimeter.

  • I was able to fix the problem in the third picture. That was an issue with the curb return corridor not being set up properly. I think I modified the return at one point and didnt change the limits of the corridor, template drop, point control, etc.

As for the other issues with the lack of triangles, it doesnt seem to be affecting my XS when I produce them from the DTM, so its probably pretty minor. In most cases, when this occurs, the profile is very flat anyway, so any issues with the tin would be minor.

    Thanks for the input.
