BE Careers Network Lobby Academic Resources » Searching Resume Center » Step 3: Perform Advanced Member Search Activities
One method for searching resumes is to use the advanced member search. This is located on the Member tab which is not the same as the general tab you find in the upper right corner of most pages. For searching resumes it is best to use the Advanced Search feature. This feature provides several additional search fields including the all-important Interests/Tags field (more on this in a moment). To use the Member - Advanced search tab:
1. Click on the Member tab
The basic member search field appears.
The Member Name search field is separate from the general search field located in the upper right corner of the page.
2. Click on the Advanced Search link.
Several additional search fields appear.
The Advanced Search provides several additional fields you can search on to focus in on the student resumes with the qualities you are looking for.
Each field provides search access to that specific part of a student's profile definition:
Members who are Here for - These are the generic categories all users fill out as part of their profile. Students often but not always select the "Being contacted about job opportunities". You can search on any of these selections.
Bio* - The free text field where the student typically includes information about individual projects they particpated in, grade point averages, and other information they feel may be pertinent to the job selection process.
Work - work history by name of company and length of employment. Only the name of the company can be searched.
Institution - the schools the students are attending or have attended and the duration. Only the institution name is searched.
Degree/Major the degree the student has either already completed or is in the process of completing.
Major / Area of Specialty - The student's major.
NOTE: There is no set standard to how the student may enter this information. You may find some enter "Civil Engineering" whereas another student may enter "Roadway Design". The entire string is searchable.
Interest / Tags - This field which is similar in use to the tagging system used elsewhere in BE Communtities.
Location / Postal Code - If the student has entered this information you can search on their current location. However, this may be where their school is and not necessarily their home location.
Language - You can search on a language but few students set this value to any value other than the default all.
*Special Note on using the Bio field for searches: This is the free form text field where the bulk of a student's "resume" will appear. Most people will gravitate to this field as the most likely one to search first. However, this isn't necessarily the case. Given that it is a free form text field, the student can and does enter a variety of information that you may or may not get a hit on depending on how closely your search string matches that of the student's. With that said, it can still be useful for locating specializations and similar information that does not fit into the other fields listed.
