Born 1967 in Prague in what was then Czechoslovakia, Jan Dvorak grew up in Switzerland near Zurich. In 1987, he started to study architecture at the ETH in Zurich, interrupting his studies from 1990 to 1991 while working in London, England for what was then Foster Associates, and spending a semester at RISD, USA, before graduating at the ETH in 1994.
In 1995, Dvorak joined German architects Ingenhoven Overdiek und Partner, where he worked on the RWE headquarter building in Essen, and was project architect for the Wan Xiang International Plaza competition entry for Shanghai, China, which was awarded first prize. The design was subsequently built, although considerably different from the competition entry.
In 1997, Dvorak moved to Prague, Czech Republic, where he set up his own architectural and engineering office, di5 architekti inzenyri, together with 4 Czech civic and structural engineers. Under his supervision, the office designed numerous buildings in and around Prague, the most notable being the headquarters for Czech energy firm CEZ. The CEZ building won the Czech Building of the Year Award in 2002.
At the end of 2003, Jan Dvorak left di5 architekti inzenyri, and set up his own practice, Dvorak architekti. The office continued on several projects that were started at Dvorak's previous office, with the Vrnata House winning Bentley's BE Award in 2007.
Currently, Dvorak architekti works on several projects at different stages, and employs 2 architects.
Jan Dvorak is married with a son and lives in Prague.
