With the release of ProjectWise V8i, a number of features of ProjectWise Geospatial were moved to the core product. This allows users to search for documents by their spatial location. In order to do this, one of the first things the ProjectWise Admin needs to do is to create a background map with one or more layers. These layers have an option of a minimum and maximum scale. In this example, I have created a background map with three layers created from the default files delivered with MicroStation. The large map will always be visible; the ward layer will appear when the scale is set to 30000 and disappears when the scale is set to 5000. The layer showing the polls appears at 10000 and never disappears since the minimum is set to zero. Now what do these numbers really mean???

In this next screenshot, you can see a background map with a grid. This grid was drawn in the main reference map in MicroStation at 5,000 feet intervals in both the X and Y directions to demonstrate the size and scale of the maps. This ProjectWise Explorer view shows the map at just over 30,000 feet (6+ grids in the horizontal direction).

As soon as the view is zoomed in so that BOTH the horizontal and vertical display is less than 30,000 feet, the ward layer appears.

Also, if the ProjectWise Explorer window is resized, the layers will reflect that as well. This last screenshot shows the Explorer window resized so the spatial pane is less than 10,000 feet in both directions, the polls are visible. If you would then zoom into this pane so the distance is less than 5,000 feet in both directions, the ward labels would disappear but no matter how close you zoom, the reference layer and the poll layer are always displayed since both have zero set as the minimum scale
