How to Change the Orientation of a Reference Attachment?

Sometimes we need to change the orientation of a reference attachment on a sheet, may be from one floor plan to another or from east elevation to north elevation. The traditional method is to delete that attachment and manually attach a new one. MicroStation V8i introduces a quick tool to seamlessly swap the orientation of an attachment.
In Figure 1, Look at the new column in the References dialog, titled Orientation. This is similar to the Orientation options in the "Reference Attachment Settings" dialog (Figure 2) when you attach a new reference.

The Orientation column gives you the flexibility to switch to different orientations of the attached model. Orientation column is the place where you have options for switching to different views of a reference viz. Standards Views, Saved Views and Named Fences. There are eight Standard views viz. Top, Front, Right, Isometric, Bottom, Back, Left and Right Isometric.

A word about reference clipping:
When you clip a reference by an element and switch from one Standard view to another, the clip boundary is retained. However, when you switch to a Saved View or Named Fence, the clip boundary is not retained. The reason is, saved views and named fences come with their own clipping.

  • This function's kinda well hidden, it took me a while to find it. So your Blog is very helpful for users.

Still I think it's the right place to include this function. And it is a good new feature not having to throw away an existing attachment just for changing orientation.

Thumbs up for the feature, thumbs up for your guidance.

  • When will be able to interactively rotate a 3D model on a sheet? The last time I asked it wasn't available, but this would be a really useful enhancement.

  • i agree! i am able to better understand things more when i can visualize it.

  • Hi Suart,

Thanks for your valuable suggestion. Currently we don’t have any plans of rotating references on sheets.  It is a good idea and we will take it into consideration for our future release.

  • thanks for this!

  • thanks for the visual!

  • can this be used for anything?

  • If your 3D view is represented through a dynamic view you just open the connected Saved View in a another view. Rotate and Save the view again - and the 3D rotated on your sheet.

Try in examples>Building>Sheets:BSI300AE301.dgn and the attached design referenced. See video on
