  • AISC ASD PARAMETERS KX, KY, KZ, LX, LY, LZ, MAIN, TMAIN

The sequence of performing code check as per AISC 9th edition in STAAD is as follows:

    1. Check for the slenderness criterion.

    2. Check for deflection (if provided)

    3. Check for combined axial and bending.

The member is designed and checked for rest of the provisions only if it passes the slenderness criterion.
STAAD includes Ky, Kz, Ly, Lz ,MAIN and TMAIN parameters under design. These parameters govern the…

Query : There seems to be problem in classification of the angle section. The double angle section is classified as slender and consequently it is failing. However the if the same member is replaced with single angle, it is passing. the STAAD file is provided below.

  • PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING THE INPUT VALUES OF THE IBC 2006 PARAMETERS

Step 1: Determine the zip code of the site under consideration. STAAD will automatically find the latitude and longitude of the location, thereby, deriving the Ss and S1 values

Alternatively, if zip code is unknown, then the latitude and longitude may be provided.

You may also manually input the value of Ss and S1 mentioned in equation 11.4.1 of ASCE 7-05 by calculating the same.
