Effective Dynamic Views !

Can Dynamic Views be the answer to creating Actual Construction Drawings or, for that matter, any drawings or sheets which can be printed?

Yes, they surely can ...

Here are some examples of Dynamic Views workflows. Any one of them can be used to generate printable drawings and sheets. Select the one that is most appropriate in your case.

You will see me mentioning Create Dynamic Views dialog. This is just a simple tool that helps you automate several steps by the click of a button. You can certainly do all those steps manually too. If you are interested in knowing more about the manual steps, just let me know. If you come across any other new terms and need help understanding them, let me know.

Goal: Here is a sample 3D House model for which the Architectural Drawings need to be made.

Approach One: Starting from the 3D Model

I created a Master Design file which has all the different floor models referenced in it. For easy understanding, I have two view windows active. One view is set to Top rotation and the other to Front view. To fulfill my requirement of creating floor plans, I placed a Fitted Section clip volume in the XY plane and keyed-in the Z height which determined the location of the cut plane. Using the Create Dynamic Views dialog, I created a Saved View that is automatically attached to a Drawing Model in the same design file. With the Create Dynamic Views dialog, I could have gone all the way to create a Sheet model too - we'll come to that shortly. I just adjusted the clip volume's Z height and created various Floor Plans on separate drawing models.

I repeated the above steps along YZ and XZ directions to create my section views in East/West or North/South direction. Notice, this time I created sheets too. Note the drawing titles on sheets. They are a crucial part of the workflow because they help in navigating across sheets by using callouts.

The Reference presentation dialog setting when edited lets me add all the Building attributes, annotations. I can also place dimensions on the saved view in the Drawing model. Create Dynamic View dialog attaches one drawing per sheet. If you want to create sheets containing multiple drawings, just drag saved views from Project Explorer or Saved Views dialog and drop them on a sheet. This will start the Attach Reference tool which allows you to place them interactively.

Here're some images of sample sheets I created by the above steps.

In the next blog, I'll show you steps to create new sheets and drawings without opening the 3D design. When you create callouts on sheets, their corresponding "called out" sheets can be created automatically.
