  • We use Bentley Structural (and other tools) for project documentation - and are interested in connecting this data to FM tools.

Are you suggesting that the FM tools in industry (including Bentley FM) don't use the data from the 3d models?

    cheers

  • I also would be interested in what people have to say.  I work for the largest Owner and Operator of Buildings in the US.  Currently in my region we are managing about 21 million sq ft in a CAFM program producing the same information in 2D.  I honestly feel that BIM has been oversold and over promised.  In working on the operational side of the house, I currently don’t see any benefit to the BIM application.  Now 15 yrs down the road maybe.1.      Managers don’t utilize 3D reports in managing this information.  All the reports are in 2D and tabular.2.      The cost of adding the 3rd dimension into the management of the floor plans.3.      The fact you have multiple models and multiple databases.  Not one database for all the models.4.      Providing just part of the model to an A/E instead of the entire model.A perfect example of is with Archibus.  They have started introducing the connection to and from BIM.  The only problem is that the connection does not provide any 3D information within the Archubus application, its still 2D.  Therefore, no benefit for users to using BIM, we would continue to utilize 2D drawings.Keep in mind if we can’t maintain the BIM model in a cost effective manner.  Then there is no benefit to using BIM in operations.Don’t get me wrong I am a strong supporter of BIM.  Just don’t oversell something you can’t deliver.
  • I'd be interested to hear how FM practitioners make use of BIM data for the operations and maintenance of the buildings.
