We just received a folder full of files that I believe make up an ESRI GeoDatabase. It is a bunch of files with gdb... extensions, some .freelist, come CatRelTypesBy... extensions and others.
My Map experience is very limited.
The upcoming Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 4) release has a new ability to work directly with Esri File Geodatabase content, which consists of folders with a number of files. I would suggest you download and take a look at the currently available Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 4) Technology Preview release. Please see this announcement for more information.

Do you know how long it takes to get accepted into the EAP for Map Ss4?

You don't have to wait for the acceptance to download and try Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 4) Beta 2. But at the same time, all issues and questions should be discussed in the closed technology preview community (I assume as Jeff wrote you now have the access to this community).
I have only a few test datasets in ESRI geodatabase format available, but I have found only one problem so far, so possibly the new BM version will help you even it's beta. And if you will find any problem, it will at least valuable for developers.
