How to figure out multi-Objective using Darwin Designer?

Hello,

I'm confused that the setting for multi-objective in Darwin Designer. There is the selection of "Multi-Objective " tradeoff in Darwin Designer. However, I hope to minimize operationg cost and capital cost (piping system), and minimum GHG emissions at the same time.  Will be possible to carry out the trade-off ? If yes, please teach me how to do that?

I understand that Darwin schedule could optimize the pumps operating and show the GHG emissions. However, it can not multi-objective optimisation both of WDS and pumps selections.

  • You really need to separate the system design and operation problems as far as optimization is concerned.

Depending on the nature of the problem, the two can be related but there are plenty of things you can do with simulations and energy manager to do that analysis.

    Hello Tom,

I have  a simple case including one reservoir, one pump and one tank as show in the photo.

The objective is to multi-objective optimisation for  selecting pump and risng main pipe diameter accounting for GHG emissions in energy and pipe material.

As I know using WaterGEMs, the GHG emissions of traiff  (consumption of energy) is available in Scenario Energy cost. Any where I could set GHG factor for the pipe material?

Another, will be possible to carry out the trade-off for GHG cost of Energy (using Darwin Schedule) Vs. optimized pipe diameter (using Darwin Designer) as the multi-Objective optimisation for the water supply systems look like below photo? If yes, how to do that ?

Meanwhile, using Darwin Designer, how to show the Pareto-Optimal curve for multi-objective? I found that if I select multi-objective as Objective Type, I have to set Available Budget. This setting influences on the final solutions at most rather than other GA parameters. It impacts on the final feasible solutions as well. Please provide more information regarding to multi-objective optimisation.

    Cheers

  • Michelle,

This is a fairly simple problem where the use of genetic algorithms is overkill. You can do all you need without GA and gain more insights into the system.

Just figure out a diameter that will give about 2 m/s velocity at peak flow. Then set up scenarios with that diameter and two diameters larger and smaller. Calculate the capital cost of each of those pipes. You can use Darwin's manual costing.

Then run the energy management tool. Determine the present worth of energy cost and add it to the capital cost. This will give the least cost solution.

Engineers have been solving problems like this forever without the need for formal optimization. Even if you're running optimization, you should always run some simulations first to gain an understanding of the problem.

  • Hello Tom,

I appreciate your answer. What my task is to research the features of the  Darwin Designer or Darwin Scheduler within WaterGEMss rather than to design the project.  I need to confirm the availability in Darwin Designer or Darwin Scheduler within WaterGEMs. As a designer, I know how to use the software. However, as a research candidate, I spend more time to research what these features could do or not on potential works. Therefore, please understand what I ask questions look like very very simple. But it is important for me, also for Bentley WaterGEMS to improve the features.

Thank you very much for response to my simple questions all the time.

    Cheers
