Find Segments tool

Hello,

In Criticality tool, I use it to find how many customers are expected to outage water; However, "Find Segment tool" do not find exactly that I click onto incidental segment. Usually, It find more outage segments than it shoud be, that will bring to misleading the number of outtage-water customers.

How can I fixed this problem?

Thanks and regards,

Dang,

  • Hello Dang,

I will need to check with some colleagues on this issue. Could you please create a service request through the service request manager (appsnet.bentley.com/.../index.aspx)? Thank you.

  • Hello Dang,

This is working as designed. If you look at the list of outage segments, you will see that a number of them have no elements. That is because if that segment was taken out of service, demands would still be able to reach customers through loops in the system.

What the Find Segment by Element tool is doing is allowing you to see what outage segment would impact a given element. So if you use "Find Segment by Element" and select ISO-8, this element is impacted only if Segment-46 is taken down. No other outage segment will impact ISO-8. If you use the "Find Segment by Element" tool and select ISO-37, this element will be impacted if either Segment 41 or Segment 46 is taken down. (Note that if you use the Find Segment by Element tool in the segmentation section instead of the Outage Segments section, it will highlight the segments related to the element you select. However, it will not show how an outage at a given segment will impact the demands in the system.)

If you want to see a specific outage segments and who is impacted, you should highlight the actual segments from the list under the Label section. In your model, there are 18 outage segments that will impact the demands. You can see this by looking at the list in the upper right. This list is in order with the most impacted elements at the top. Most segments have zero impacted elements because if that segment is taken down, flow is still available for downstream customers through loops or other paths in the system. Some at dead ends only impact a small number of items, like Segment 32. Others are larger, with Segment 46 having the largest impact, due to the layout of the system.

So, the "Find Segment by Element" tool in the Outage Segments section will display any segment that may impact that element. Some elements may not be impacted at all. Some may be be impacted by multiple segments. In your example, ISO-8 is only impacted if Segment 46 is taken down, which is why this section is highlighted.

    Regards,
    Scott
