Object reference not set to an instance of an object when doing pipe splits.

Hi, im receiving an error everytime i try to split the new pipes in my model. This problem seems to only occur in any new pipes that was added. The older pipes that was created earlier seems to split just fine.

This problem seems to only occur on this specific model. Any fix for this? Could it be that one of the watercad files (dwh. or something) is corrupted?

  • Please try to compact the database, to see if that helps.

    1. Open the software but, do not open your project file. This can be done by clicking on the application icon and selecting close on the Welcome window.
    2. Go to Tools > Database Utilities > Compact Database..
    3. In this next step you are presented two options: 1) Retain record to optionally allow elements to be completely restored later 2) Purge records to save space. Option 2 for purging records will work best to help the database functional optimally as it reduces the number of unnecessary records saved.

If this doesn't help then we would need a copy of your model.

There are two options for sharing your model files on  Communities. If you would like the files to be visible to other members, compress the files into a zip file and upload them as an attachment using the ‘Advanced Reply editor’ before posting. If your data is confidential, you can follow the instructions in the link below to send it to us via Bentley Sharefile. Files uploaded to Sharefile can only be viewed by Bentley.

If you send the model, please post here so we know it is available.

Also please let us know , which software are you using and the version of it.

  • The software im using is the WaterCAD SS5.
  • Could you please provide the steps to reproduce the issue?
Are you performing batch pipe split?
Also if you could point out to any particular area in the model to look for , it would be great.

  • The error happens everytime i try to split a pipe with say a node, or a tank etc. You can try draw a pipe in anywhere of the model and try to split it with a node. The error message "object reference not set to an instance of an object" will appear.
  • Hello Oswin,

I was unable to reproduce the issue when I tried splitting random pipes in the model with either junctions or tanks. If this occurs at specific locations in your model, please let us know where this is. Otherwise, please try the steps below to see if they help.

First, make sure that you have the latest patch set installed. You can find information on doing this at the following link: communities.bentley.com/.../8175.how-do-i-download-watergems-watercad-hammer-sewergems-sewercad-civilstorm-stormcad-pondpack-flowmaster-culvertmaster

If that doesn't help, close WaterCAD and then browse to where the model is saved. Create a new folder and move just the .WTG and .WTG.SQLITE files to the new folder. Now, open WaterCAD and open the model from the new folder location.

If that doesn't work either, try importing the database file by going to File > Import > WaterCAD database, and selecting the .WTG.SQLITE file. This will import the model into a new drawing.

    Regards,
    Scott
  • I was also unable to reproduce the issue. I added new pipes and tried splitting them. I had no problems. I tried the batch pipe split and had no problems with that either.

As Scott suggested, please make sure you have the latest cumulative patch. If you are a SELECT user, I suggest creating a service request and requesting the latest patch as they are currently not on the Bentley site.

  • Hi, created a service request to Bentley and the problem was fixed with a patch. Quick and efficient. Thanks!
