Design open channel in sewerGEMS

How I can make SewerGEMS design the open channels (slope, dimensions, invert level, .....) ?

or Do I have to input all these data and it will only analyse it !

Does CivilStorm do that or not ?

  • Hello Osman,

Are you asking about the Automated Design feature when setting the Active Numerical Solver calculation option to GVF Rational or GVF Convex? The GVF Rational solver (and its automated design focused on storm drain networks) is available in both SewerGEMS and CivilStorm, as well as StormCAD. The GVF Convex solver (and its automated design focused on sewers) is available in both SewerGEMS and SewerCAD.

Automated design only works with Conduits elements (not channels / cross sections) and only with certain shapes - note that the "available for design" option in the conduit catalog is grayed out for some shapes. See related article:

Can automated design size open channels?

What cross sectional shape do you need to model? Are you able to pick from one of the shapes in the conduit catalog that has the design option available? If so, you can use the conduit element and automated design will attempt to select from the conduit class (based on the initially selected class and material in each conduit) to size the pipe based on your design constraints.

With channels, you always have the option of analyzing the system with any of the solvers, then manually adjust as needed.
