Can I recover an old WATERCAD file that was deleted by accident?

I need to recover an old WATERCAD file that was deleted. I could find it and finally recover it by using a Recovering software; however , when trying to open it ,there is an ERROR message. This error message is in Spanish, but it seems to be related to this other error message "Unrecognized database format". What can I do? I have already tried to open Microsoft Access and use the compact and repair tool in order to repair the database. Also, I have tried to recover my model by copying the model files to a new folder and removing the ".01.bak" extensions. I think these are not appropriate solutions for my problem.

  • Hi Gabriela,

What version of WaterCAD are you using currently? To find the version number, open the Help menu and select About WaterCAD. The version number will appear on the lower-left corner of the dialog and should start with 08.11.XX.XX. If I convert the files to a version newer than the one you are using you won't be able to open them as the models are not forward compatible.

Please provide your model files and any BAK files you have. There are two options for sharing your model on Communities, whichever you choose please be sure to zip your files first. The first option is to attach the zip file containing your model to your reply on the forum using the Advanced Reply Editor (you'll find the link below and to the right of the reply box). If your data is confidential please use the instructions in the link below to send it via Bentley Sharefile. Files uploaded to Sharefile can only be viewed by Bentley employees. Please be sure to reply on this thread with the name of the file after it has been uploaded.

  • Hi Craig C.,

I think I made a mistake. The software that I´m currently using is WaterGEMS V8i. The version number is 08.11.05.61. I´m not sure if the problem relates to the version of the software because I have been using the same version for a long time. I would be grateful if you could help me checking up the file that I have attached.

  • The first thing I did was try to open the WTG file in a text editing program to see what version was last used to edit the file. When I did this, there wasn't text as I was expecting.

When I open the model you provided the following dialog appears.

This error is discussed here. That article suggests the WTG file is corrupt and that makes sense since it didn't open as expected in a text editor. However neither of the solutions in the article were successful with your model.

I will open a service request on your behalf and submit a defect to address this. Please reply to my private message with your details so I can add you to our system.

  • The SQLite file for a new model is about 6.7MB and the ones you provided are about 5.2MB.

Unfortunately, the SQLite and the .SQLite.01.bak files are too damaged and are not recoverable.

  • You could also take a look in the following folder

    %temp%\Bentley\WaterCAD\

This is the where temporary files are stored while a model is being worked on.

Model files are not typically left there when closing an application, however if a product closes unexpectedly there may be some left behind. Look for files ending with a $$$ extension.

    1. Copy the ".wtg.sqlite.$$$" file to a folder on your local drive.
    2. Rename the file's extension from ".wtg.sqlite.$$$" to ".wtg.sqlite".
    3. Open WaterCAD, open the File menu, select Import, then select WaterCAD database.

See:Can I restore a backup file of my model project?
