GEMS project datafile not found

Hello everyone,

I am running a model on WaterCAD v4,  all of a sudden when I tried opening one of my files I got an error that reads "File open problem. GEMS project datafile, 'filename'.MDB, not found.  This file must be located in the same directory as the .WCD file."

Does anyone know how can I fix this.  This model has a lot of work put into it and having to start from scratch would set me back a few weeks at least?

Any help would be appreciated.

Marc

  • Jesse,

My program files terminate in .mdk and .wck, I am assuming that it is comparable to the .mdb and .wcb.  The WaterCAD version is v7.0.  When I tried importing the file I was able to select it, but when clicking to open, I get a “WaterCAD Problem” pop-up that reads “Error Opening…file name.MDB (this may not be a valid project file).”

I also tried using Access again, I found the “compact & repair database” option, but it gave me this pop-up window “You attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user ‘Admin’ on machine ‘WORKING’. Try again when the database is available.”

Then I closed WaterCAD and tried running Access only, and saved the file as ‘database’. Then opened watercad and imported the file, it finally loaded up the file, but now the whole model (junctions, tanks, pumps and labels) are super small and have to zoom in significantly; I am sure I should be able to figure out a way to make all text and elements large again.

Sorry, I described the process step by step, but thought that it would help provide a better understanding as to what the problem could have been and how we arrived to the solution.

I appreciate all your help and input, you have saved me many weeks of work and stress.

  • Thanks Marc,

I'm glad to hear that you were able to open the model. It does sound like there may have been some corruption in the database and the "repair" option may have cleared that up.

When importing the database, you will lose visual settings like color coding and annotations, but you can create them again using the same tools. You can also adjust the global sizes under Tools > Options.

You may want to try opening the file normally after repairing the database - simply open the WCD file and as long as the repaired MDB file has the same base file name in the same folder, it should open. If it does not and you must import the database, you should be able to recreate the annotations without too much trouble. If it still zooms out very far when clicking Zoom Extents, you may have some elements or linework (such as from the text, box or line tool) far off in the distance. This could possibly be an artifact of the repair.

You will also want to thoroughly check the model, as the corruption could have introduced some changes to your data. If you have results saved from before the problem occurred, that might be a good start. If all results are identical, you probably did not lose any important hydraulic data.

As Sushma noted, if you have a .MDK backup file, you can try restoring that in case it has the pre-corruption version of the database.
