SewerGEMS - The total area in the CN/Area Collection does not equal the total catchment area.

I recently received a model that has been calibrated and run before.  When I try to run the model I receive user notifications for many of the catchments, as follows:  "the total area in the CN/Area collection does not equal the total catchment area."

The runoff properties for the catchment are set up as follows:  Runoff Method = Unit Hydrograph, Area Defined By = Multiple Subareas, Loss Method = SCS CN, Unit Hydrograph Method = SCS Unit Hydrograph, SCS Unit Hydrograph Method = Default Curvilinear

It appears to only occur when the catchment geometry is set to Use Scaled Area = true and Areas Defined By = Multiple Subareas.  I can correct the issue if I set Use Scaled Area = false and set the Areas Defined By t = single.  But i have to recalculate what the area should be based on the multiple areas/CN numbers.  This will be very time consuming.

I am currently using SewerGEMS V8i (SELECTseries 5).  I believe the model was originally set up and run in an earlier version of SewerGEMS.  Does anyone have any experience with this issue and if so, any ideas on how to fix it?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

  • Hello Vicki,

Could you provide a copy of the model files? There are two options for sharing your model on Communities, whichever you choose please be sure to zip your files first. The first option is to attach the zip file containing your model to your reply on the forum using the Advanced Reply Editor (you'll find the link below and to the right of the reply box). If your data is confidential please use the instructions in the link below to send it via Bentley Sharefile. Files uploaded to Sharefile can only be viewed by Bentley employees. Please be sure to reply on this thread with the name of the file after it has been uploaded.

  • Thank you Scott! I have uploaded the files to Sharefile.

  • I forgot to add the names of the file(s) are SWMP-Final. Thanks again.

  • Hello Vicki,

Thanks for uploading the model files.
If you are looking at the catchment properties>Subareas, you will find that, the sum of the "Area/Total Area %" is not equal to 100 % for the catchments with the error message.

For the subareas option, the division of all the area should be defined with respective SCS CN factors, i.e. you should cover 100 % area subdivision.
All the catchments with this error message, have the same issue.

  • Thank you Sushma!

Could the model have still run in earlier versions even with the Area/Total Area % not equal to 100%? Is there a way to pull up the percentages in one table to edit all at once? Or would I have to select each catchment individually to edit?

  • It looks like the model was last saved in a very old V8 XM version of SewerGEMS from 10 years ago. (here's how you can find this out)

I looked at the model in V8i SELECTseries 4 and saw the same, red user notifications.

I then looked at the model in V8i SELECTseries 3 and did not see the notifications - the model validated and computed without complaining about the areas.

This means that a reporting improvement was made between SS3 and SS4, to better inform you when this occurs, so that you can correct it.
