Why ‘Design Head’ must be greater than ‘Max Operating Head’ while defining a Pump?

    As you know Design Head is what the pump is intended to operate on & which is best operating point of pump, whereas max operating point gives the highest discharge the pump can deliver. Beyond this point pump may not operate as expected. Same is mentioned in the help.

    So design head is always greater to deliver optimum flow through the pump & max operating head gives the maximum flow for a pump. Hope it clears your doubt.

    A problem happened for me:
    You explained the question using 'max operating point', but I asked from 'Max Operating Head' (Look at Photo attached)
    When does 'Max Operating Head' occur? As you said, 'Max Operating Head' occurs when discharge of pump becomes utmost (max operating head gives the maximum flow for a pump). Is it right?

    The Max Operating point is the both the max operating head and the maximum flow the pump is intended to operate at. Per the WaterGEMS Help documentation:

    Max Operating — Highest discharge for which the pump is actually intended to run. At discharges above this point, the pump may behave unpredictably, or its performance may decline rapidly.

    The "Max Operating" term is based on flow. This is the maximum flow expected from the pump. WaterGEMS does extrapolate the pump curve beyond this point, down to a zero head case. If the flow from the pump is beyond the max operating point, a user notification is generated.

    I would encourage you to review the Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management book for more information. Section 2.7 of the AWDM has some basics on pump curves.
