Creating a Selection Set in ArcMap Environment

I have tried to select multiple  junctions for a new Selection Set using the WaterGEMS "arrow selection" when in ArcMap without any success.  Even though I am holding down the ALT key, once I click onto another junction, the formerly highlighted junction becomes "unselected".  I am able to do this type of multiple selection when just running WaterGEMS.  Any ideas as to why this occurs in ArcMAP?

Thanks

MJ

  • Hi Matt,

I have my guesses as to why the selection arrow on the WaterGEMs toolbar is probably designed like this, but I have asked another person, who knows a little bit more about the design aspects of WaterGEMS for ArcMap if he knows and can explain it to me. My best guess is that it has something to do with the way the ArcMap platform functions.

As you might know in ArcMap there is a special selection cursor and a few other ways to selection objects in ArcMap, which can be seen in the screen shot below.

One of the ways that I like to select elements that you might try while I am trying to find an answer for you is by opening the attributes table for that layer and selecting the element using the table. There are probably at least 2 or 3 others ways that I can think of too because in ArcMap, as with many programs, there are different ways to accomplish the same task.

  • Mark,

Thanks for the recommendation.  Using the table was a good work around.  Ideally  it would be nice to select all the applicable elements on the fly for certain selection groups as the table approach requires you to have the elements ID'd /Labels before hand and work down through the table.

  • Matt,

I have heard back from the person that I contacted yesterday and he seems to think the selection option on the WaterGEMS arrow is a feature that could be added, so I will put in an enhancement for you that will be considered for an upcoming version of the software. For your reference that enhancement number is 131686.

If you'd like to select the elements individually in the drawing pane there is another way that you can do this. You can enable Editing and use the edit arrow (see screen shot below) to select multiple elements by holding down the shift key and clicking on each element.  After selecting the elements you'll have to then click on the WaterGEMS selection arrow bring it down to open white space on your drawing pane and at this point your elements should still be selected, so you will right click on that white space and choose "Create Selection Set". That should also work for you.
