Color Coding elements based on component installation year

Is there a way to color code all elements based on their installation year? For example, everything built in 1985 is red, 1995 is blue, 2005 is green, etc. Can this be applied to other characteristics such as pipe size or material?

  • dculeton,

Please see the wiki found here for directions on how to color code based on element properties.

  • Mark,

Thanks for your help. I generated color coding for pipe installation year and generated a nice legend for it. I tried doing the same thing for fire flows and the legend turned out in odd proportions

    Any advice for fixing this?

  • Please have a look at this wiki technote for the answer:

To help find answers to future questions or problems, I would recommend trying the Search bar. You can click "Change search scope" to focus the search on Hydraulics & Hydrology products only. This will search through years of other forum discussions, plus a wealth of information we have built up in our Support Solutions article repository. The best way to search is to use a key word for what you are looking for, in this case it might have been "Legend", followed by comma then the name of the product "WaterCAD". That should pull up a good search history that can then be filtered by wikis, forum posts, or groups. If you're looking for information on the hydraulics and hydrology products just make sure to try to filter by those.

    I hope that helps out.

  • Although I did not see that wiki, I had tried all of those things. It claims there is an ability to modify the properties of the element symbology by double clicking the element itself which I was unable to do. The method of changing the symbol or text scaling in the Tools>Options results in all text and symbols being scaled up. Same thing happens if I change the drawing scale, as I suspected. Any other advice?

    Thanks,

  • David,

I think I have a solution for you. Double click on where it says "Hydrant" in the element symbology (View > Element symbology if you need to open the window). Next change the symbol size multiplier for your hydrants to something smaller and close the element symbology properties for the hydrants. Then locate the color coding that you created the legend based on and right click on it like you were going to create a another legend for it, but this time choose "Refresh Legend". I think you just have your symbol sizes set really large like many people often do. What you might want to try instead of making the symbol sizes really large next time is to change the drawing style from CAD to GIS. The directions in this wiki explain how to do that:

    http://communities.bentley.com/products/hydraulics___hydrology/w/hydraulics_and_hydrology__wiki/16559.how-do-i-change-the-drawing-style-solution-500000053801

What the GIS drawing style does is retain the size of the elements in your drawing no matter how far in or out you zoom, which I find makes it easier to work with models.
