water Age and Reservoir Pattern

Dear Team,

In my model (Day1 + water ADD), i set a pattern for my reservoir ie. it will be active for 16 hours then from for 8 hrs inactive. Initial age is set for '0'. The system is , reservoir supplies to tank for 16 hrs and stop supply but distribution from tank is 24 hrs.  While performing age analysis, i am getting age for the pipe between reservoir and tank is 8 hrs. reservoir  and tank is next to each other. ( Say pipe lenght is10m). so this 8 hrs is added upon the downstream pipes also from the tank. Hence, i am getting more age but it should not be the case. I need the water age at tank outlet should be Zero. Need your suggestions please. for sure water age in potable water network (Suffix with PW-) is less than 24 hours only. I model for your reference (Model) uploaded in secure file transfer.

Thanks for the consistent support.

  • RSP,

I see the results that you are talking about and they are displayed by the graph below:

The reason this is happening is because at 16 hours when you pattern stops flow from the reservoir there is no new supply of water entering the system, so the water in the pipe will age an hour at a time until the end of your 24 hour simulation. It sounds like you don't think the water should age in this pipe though, could you please explain why?

  • RSP,

Upon reading your question again, are you saying that you would like the water in the tank to be zero?

  • Dear Mpachlhofer,

Reason why i want is, the reservoir is at higher elevation (supplying from hill top) than tank. once outlet valve closed at reservoir on 16th hour, then whatever the water in the pipe will be discharged in to the tank making pipe empty. so no water in the pipe. water is filling from the top in the tank. ie the elevation of incoming pipe from reservoir to tank is nowhere below the tank's top level.

Further, i want the water age starting from tank only (age =0). There can be some minimum hours in the tank because of the capacity more than the outflow.

    Thanks,

  • If you only want to consider the system starting at the tank, eliminate the reservoir and pipe from the model and represent them as a negative demand with a pattern. Then the tank would be starting point for water age calculations.
  • Dear Tom,
I tired that too, by considering the demand in tank as negative valve and provided the same pattern (working 1 to 16 hrs), but the age results shows in all the pipes as the value given in duration of simulation. Ie. 24 hrs simulation then all the pipes age is 24 hrs.

But, I want to show the client with source (Reservoir) only. Unless, they will not accept the model. Client want to see the dynamics in tank as per at site. My doubt is, why model is considering the age for empty pipe. since my operation hours is only 16 hrs only out of 24 hrs. As reservoir as a source, unless we allocate a age to it , it should be '0' only.

    Share your ideas please.

    Thanks for the support.
