GEMS project datafile not found

Hello everyone,

I am running a model on WaterCAD v4,  all of a sudden when I tried opening one of my files I got an error that reads "File open problem. GEMS project datafile, 'filename'.MDB, not found.  This file must be located in the same directory as the .WCD file."

Does anyone know how can I fix this.  This model has a lot of work put into it and having to start from scratch would set me back a few weeks at least?

Any help would be appreciated.

Marc

  • Do you have the backup file "mdb.01.bak"- of your .mdb file? you can restore the .mdb file from the backup file.
If yes , then please copy this file and rename it as .mdb again and try to open the project.

  • Marc,

It sounds like you are using version 6.X or 7.0 of WaterCAD, which is quite old. These versions used a .WCD and .MDB file to store model data. Both files would be in the same folder you saved the project to, with the same base file name. Do you see the corresponding .MDB file in the folder where you are opening the .WCD file from? Was it accidently renamed or moved? If so, try moving it back and renaming it to match the same base file name as the .WCD file.

If both files are present and with the same base file name, there may be a corruption. Try opening the model database direction in WaterCAD by going to File > Import > GEMS Project, then select the .MDB file.

If this does not work and you have Microsoft Access installed, try opening the .MDB file in Access and run the repair option.

If needed, you can try sending us the model files for review. There are two options for sharing your model on Communities, whichever you choose please be sure to zip your files first. The first option is to attach the zip file containing your model to your reply on the forum using the Advanced Reply Editor (you'll find the link below and to the right of the reply box). If your data is confidential please use the instructions in the link below to send it via Bentley Sharefile. Files uploaded to Sharefile can only be viewed by Bentley employees. Please be sure to reply on this thread with the name of the file after it has been uploaded.

I'd recommend looking into upgrading your WaterCAD version. We've introduced a lot of improvements over the years and use .SQLITE database files now for storing model data, which have proven to be less susceptible to corruption (MDB file corruption is still rare, but much more rare with SQLITE).

  • Jesse,

I uploaded the files related to my project in question via sharefile, although I was not sure how to confirm that the file uploaded? Could you take a look at all the files available and see if it can be repaired. I tried following your instructions through the Windows Access, but could not figure out how to go about conducting the repair.

    Once again, thanks.
  • Hello Marc,

So it sounds like you were able to locate the .MDB file? What happened when you tried importing it via File > Import > GEMS Project? What is your WaterCAD version number as seen under Help > About?

Regarding Microsoft Access - the location of the repair option depends on the version of Access. In Office 365, it is under the File menu, where you will see a button for "Compact and Repair Database"

Unfortunately it does not appear that your file has uploaded. Please try compressing the files into one zip file first, with a short file name, then try again. If you encounter a problem uploading, try a different browser (Internet Explorer, Edge, Chrome, Firefox, etc)

  • Jesse,

My program files terminate in .mdk and .wck, I am assuming that it is comparable to the .mdb and .wcb.  The WaterCAD version is v7.0.  When I tried importing the file I was able to select it, but when clicking to open, I get a “WaterCAD Problem” pop-up that reads “Error Opening…file name.MDB (this may not be a valid project file).”

I also tried using Access again, I found the “compact & repair database” option, but it gave me this pop-up window “You attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user ‘Admin’ on machine ‘WORKING’. Try again when the database is available.”

Then I closed WaterCAD and tried running Access only, and saved the file as ‘database’. Then opened watercad and imported the file, it finally loaded up the file, but now the whole model (junctions, tanks, pumps and labels) are super small and have to zoom in significantly; I am sure I should be able to figure out a way to make all text and elements large again.

Sorry, I described the process step by step, but thought that it would help provide a better understanding as to what the problem could have been and how we arrived to the solution.

I appreciate all your help and input, you have saved me many weeks of work and stress.
