criticality analysis feature and Pressure Driven Demand feature of WaterGEMS v8i

Hello Sir Tom Walski & all experts there,

Greetings!

I am currently doing my Master Thesis on Asset Management of Water Supply system and part of my research is to do criticality analysis of water distribution system.  I learned that v8i has the capability of doing criticality analysis & PDD analysis.  I just want to ask if I can use v8i as a tool for my research?  I've been using WaterGEMS V8 xm before so this v8i is new to me, but our office has already this version because we have upgraded already last year.   Please advice.  Also, in doing the condition analysis like modeling of breakage rates of the pipelines, is V8i also capable of analyzing it?  Your help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Have a nice day.

Kind regards,

James T. Gonida

  • Hello James,

Both V8 XM and V8i have the ability to do criticality and pressure dependent demand studies.

As for the modeling of breakage rates - could you elaborate a little? Are you looking to do a transient simulation to see if pressure surges exceed a pipe's burst point? Or, are you looking to see how much flow would leave a break of a certain size? For the former, you would need to use Bentley HAMMER. For the latter, you could estimate it using the orifice equation, PDD or maybe the Discharge To Atmosphere node.

  • Hi Jesse,

Thanks a lot.  Sorry, it's been a while that I wasn't able to reply your comments.  I just finished my double Masters from Unesco-IHE in Delft and in AIT, Thailand and I'm back to work now here in Philippines.  Looking forward for more knowledge sharing with you in the days to come.  Im currently assessing our water distribution networks using watergems v8i.

    With kind regards,

    James

  • You should also look at the Pipe Renewal Planner portion of WaterGEMS for overall condition assessment of pipes considering criticality, pipe breaks and capacity.
