Fatal Error: DBX CAS 4 when attempting to open any AutoCAD file in MicroStation

I've recently installed MicroStation SS3. I don't know if this error happened after I also installed AutoCAD 2013 or not. Anytime I attempt to open ANY AutoCAD DWG or DXF file with Microstation I get this error message: Fatal Error DBX CAS 4. I've tried reinstalling AutoCAD, repairing my MicroStation and RealDWG installations, but still cannot open any AutoCAD files (any version).  Any ideas out there about what might be causing this error?

  • I get this error with BentleyView SS2 sometimes. Closing the program and re-starting usually fixes it. Not sure waht causes it though!

  • DBX CAS 4 is a security error usually from an object enabler.  It appears a common error in AutoCAD world.  It is from a module either from Autodesk or a 3rd part developer.  Have you installed an object enabler to RealDWG for MicroStation?  Installing AutoCAD, or object enablers for AutoCAD for that matter should generally not affect RealDWG for MicroStation, but adding them to RealDWG has direct impact on MicroStation.

We do not fully understand this issue either.  Based on what Autodesk has told us, it may have something to do with how an AutoCAD/RealDWG object enabler gets built.

  • Thanks for the extra information. I have not installed any object enablers...I did install the RealDWG 2012 from Bentley ...in fact it was all working fine either until I installed AutoCAD 2013 or until I updated to SS3 (I'm not sure).  Now I've uninstalled AutoCAD 2013 and reinstalled SS3 just to get back to the point where I hoped it would work, but I still cannot open any DWG or DXF files...I can however in V8 2004.  I'm not sure what else I can try to get back to being able to open DWGs in SS3...

  • I didn't notice this before but I get this error in SS3 when attempting to open a DWG after first getting the DBX CAS 4 error - maybe that can help narrow down the issue?

  • That is just a result of RealDWG failure apparently due to the DBX CAS 4 error.

I know some object enablers when you only meant to install for AutoCAD it actually installs over all RealDWG host apps, AutoCAD, MicroStation or anything based on RealDWG.  If you happened to have done that, this is the first thing to check.

Have you tried uninstalling all AutoCAD's followed by rebooting your OS?
