TRUSTED Licenses - Add a Switch to either ALLOW or NOT ALLOW this feature

All

I have many many clients that hate being able to go over their quota of licenses.  They hate even more that Bentley will charge them a quarterly fee for such pleasures.  I have been speaking to my clients which include; RSHP, Grimshaws, PLP, AECOM, AEDAS, CAPITA, MOTT MacDonalds etc.  and they would like their CAD Managers to be able to set a switch to either allow trusted licenses or not.

Can we add an option to the Select Server license tool to allow this.  See a mock up I have created below;

Thank you

  • This would require all clients to be modified. They'd have to become unable to launch if no connection can be established with the license server. It's not as simple as adding a "no QTL's please!" switch on the server.
    Moreover, the change shouldn't hinder people who DO want access to the software while being offline.

    I suppose it would be doable to create separate activation keys that would either require you to be online or not. These could then be used only with versions of the program that are properly equipped to require you to be online, or with all versions if it's not required.

    What should happen when you lose connection while running MicroStation? Close MicroStation? Suspend operation until you regain connection? Start counting down to close? Or keep the license blocked assuming it's still in use until the client comes online again and closes the application?

    I think you'll have to agree that this would be quite the undertaking that would go way beyond simply adding a checkbox on the server.
  • Hi Koert

    Thank you for the reply. I understand what you are saying. But.. there are software providers that can do this @ a cost. One that I have used before is www.sassafras.com/taming-bentley-select-with-k2

    So why cant Bentley offer this as an option.

    CAD Managers should be able to control this ........Users either want to be able to exceed their licenses or not. Even with or without internet connection
