Google Earth / Maps background

I have exported cable routes from a MicroStation design file ias a kmz file which all works very well with Google Earth and Google Maps.

It would be extremely useful to display the google background in the MicroStation design file to draw the cable routes against. Is this possible, or any alternative?

It's unclear whether you are commenting about something in MicroStation or something going wrong when you post to this Forum.

    Hi Jon,

Sorry if I was unclear; it is when I created a new post

    Dave,

Opening KMZ files directly in MicroStation is something we plan to add in the future. In the meantime, V8i Select Update 1 will add support for opening SHP files directly. I believe there are several free converters out there to translate KMZ to SHP, so this is probably your best bet for now.

    Thanks,

Do you have something in your DGN file that you can set monument points to?  Like a building or road?  I may have missunderstood your question but as far as I know you can match the monument points that you set in Microstation to points in Google Earth and the Google Earth background will show up in the right position and aspect in your DGN file.

John is correct that you can also make use of the Capture Google Earth Image tool. If you search for that phrase in MicroStation's help, you should find simple instructions that will get you up and running.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I have added 4 Placemarks in google earth at the extremes of the cable routes, saved them as klm files and then added them as Placemark Monuments in MicroStation. These points obviously match as the cable routes in Google Earth are from the kmz file I produced from the same dgn file.

At no point does the google earth backgound show in the MicroStation file and nothing in the limited help states that it will or that there is an option to do it.

The idea of this is to use the google earth background in MicroStation to draw new / modified cables in MicroStation then update the kmz file.

     Am I missing something?

    Hi Matt,

Thanks for your reply. I'm hoping John is correct but I cannot get the google earth image to display in MicroStation. Is this definitely possible as it is not in the help.

The capture image works but it is unusable at the screen resolution, so maybe if what John suggested does not work I can zoom in and capture and attach multiple area background images

    Dave,

To clarify - the Google Earth image data will only display if you use Capture Google Earth Image. This is what both John and I are referring to.

As a workaround for the image resolution being low when you capture, you can:
    1) Immediately after capturing the GE image, do not move your GE view at all. Choose File->Save->Save Image, and browse to the same directory as your DGN file. Look for the "terrainCapture" image with the highest number, and replace that with the GE image you're saving.
    2) Close your design file in MicroStation and reopen it.
    3) If you look at the captured area now, the low-res black and white image should be replaced with a higher resolution image from Google Earth. As long as you didn't move your camera, this image should be placed correctly on the mesh.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Thanks Matt, that works

  • Is there a way to see the google image in wireframe mode?

  • In reply to Kurt Rasmussen:

    Cadzu,

You would need to use a workaround to accomplish that - probably the easiest would be to capture the Google Earth image in a separate model or file, reference that model in, and set the reference's presentation to Smooth.

    Thanks,
    Matt

  •  about having google earth inside microstation...

I've not tried it but it looks like it displays in an standard microstation windows; if you can use this window to draw lines, here there are your wishes materialized.

I am having a problem with the google earth imagery implementation in v8i. I have captured a Googel Earth image into a 3D model. I have referenced that model into a 2D model. In the 2D model I have inserted a 2D map image of a subdivision. I want to overlay the 2D map onto the google earth image and align it with the image. The problem is if I set view display to smooth, the 2D map disappears and if I set it to wireframe, the Google Earth image disappears. How can display both images so I can align them?

In the attachments dialog box you need to highlight the attachment with the google earth image in it then go to Settings->Presentation and change that to smooth

Yes that works. I don't understand why but it works. Thank you!
