[V8i 09.536] Pan View Problem

Yes. I know that I have published this twice before. It is however this problem is likely fixed and recovered and fixed and recovered again. So let me explain what's news in this version.

Define : "card" - not smooth, just like startup an old car you will hear "card card card card card........"

In some case (I don't know what condition), when you together press the wheel button and move your mouse quickly [use Pan drag], you can see the graphic "carding" for around 0.5s~1s [for some drawing]. After that it works smooth. But it "cards" every time you when *start* the pan view function.

In the same environment, if I've already startup the drawing function such as place smartline, Don't draw anythings, and just use the pan view function. It would not "card" at the startup but also works smooth when moving the view. [Not always True]

So, it looks like the startup code are different. Hope that help for the next release of Microstation.

  • turn off all anti aliasing in the  workspace prefs fixes a lot of view thing for me

Also your graphix card drivers need to be latest version  and in windows turn off all hardware acceleration..

Can you get a better more powerful graphics card not the onboard one .. a gamers one gives awsome added performance!

  • As Lorys suggested, try to disable the anti-alias and also, after having upgrade your video card drivers, try to set them for maximum performance.

What you see could be a delay of your video card frame buffer but I cannot reproduce it, models are pan-dragged very smoothly.

Bear in mind that graphic performance also depend on size and complexity of the models you are handling and of course the performance of your graphic card.

You could try disabling the visual themes for MicroStation (see this article) and also borrow a faster video card for some testing.

What are your workstation specs (RAM, CPU, Video card)? IS the Video Card Fully DirectX 11 compliant?

  • I think that is not relative to hardware because it doesn't happen in mstn SS2 07.443 and also mstn SS3 Update 2 09.459 [unsure]. For the display card, I turned on the software graphic because WinXP with DirectX9 don't help that much for 2D drafting but in result of slowing down the display in very large scale map.

And also I mentioned that starting the place smartline tools and then use pen view (under same zooming area), it response faster. To conclude, it is most likely to be software problem unless Bentley increased the hardware requirement. It is anyways depend on if developers care about the view freezing of ~0.5s.

  • Anthony, Select Series 2 uses Direct X 9 while Select Series 3 by default uses DirectX  11, which is not supported by all graphic cards, especially with older OS like Windows XP.

Can you try setting the variable here below as a Windows System variable? This will force MicroStation Select Series 3 to use Direct X 9.

    QV_D3DVERSION = 9

  • Forget about the graphic cards. What i meant is that both SS2 and 09.536 version are also have software graphic enabled but in result of different pan view feeling.

(Actually, in SS3 beta version it responses low, in SS3 update 1 version it freeze up 20s, in SS3 update 2 [09.536] is now this case.....)
