Convert old Versacad .2D files to DGN or DXF

  • I have several old Versacad files with extension.2D that  I would like to convert to DGN or DXF.  I tried running Microstation J Import but the application failed with a "system fault 144" error message.  I then tried running through the key-ins the MSBATCH.MA and .BAT files with the same result.  Thoughts or workarounds?

    Thanks

  • You mention "I tried running Microstation J Import", but posted your inquiry in a MicroStation V8 forum. Could you clarify what you are doing, please? TIA

  • I am trying to convert old VersaCAD .2D files to DGN or DXF.  How this gets done or what version (I am using v. 08.05.02.70 but have access to older versions of Microstation back to SE) is used makes no difference.
  • The reason for my question/reply is that (for a variety of reasons) the VersaCAD import utility was not brought forward in MicroStation V8... and the utility that was included in pre-V8 releases will not work in MicroStation V8. Further, "old VersaCAD .2D" could be relative... the specific VersaCAD release of the files you have may not be supported in the VersaCAD import utility that is included with pre-V8 MicroStation releases, but that is difficult to check without seeing one of the files.

That said, you might want to connect with the folks who developed VersaCAD... see Archway Systems for more information regarding that -- great bunch of folks there.

  • These .2D files are from at least 1989 maybe older and, although not critical to the project, it would speed things up nicely if I could get the data in it's native format.  I'll give Archway a jingle and see if they can help.  Thanks much.
  • Another thing that might be happening is whether the files came from a PC or a Mac... the formats of those files is also different. But, the folks at Archway are the definitive experts regarding that.

  • Bruce - You can contact me directly at mike(at)versacad(dot)com or mike(at)archwaysystems(dot)com

If the files have a .2d extension then they must be PC based files since the Mac files didn't have any extensions.  If you want to send me a file I can look inside the binary and see what version it is.

Phil - I've lost track which was the last version of MicroStation that supported the VersaCAD import, was that MicroStation J or MicroStation SE?

MicroStation/J could import VersaCAD 386 Version 7 files.
