Well I solved at least my problem.
answers.microsoft.com/.../4e1adc26-872c-4271-bda5-e38edcd2d527
Basically use msconfig to shut off all but what is needed. Install MicroStation and then turn everything back on.
Has anyone solved this?
Some systems 08.05.02.70 Windows 7 x64 it load just fine. Others it crashes out just after selecting Typical, Minimum, Complete. First time I did get unhandled error. Now the wizard disappears. Tried running "Run as Administrator" no luck. MicroStation J and V8i install and uninstall fine.
Why don't we just use V8i? Because as much as everone would like to believe versions of MicroStation are not interchagable. Even different versions of 2004 will have plt conflicts. Also since they did away with IRASB and BatchPlot and we have clients who have it embeded in thier Menus.
We were able to get the install to finish on a virtual system with limited applications installed. This confirms the install will work and gives us some hope. We still cannot install on a production system. These systems are built with a standard company image and Microstation is installed afterward. We are now focusing our efforts on the applications on the image and the install order of the applications.
Are you aware of any applications that would kill the installation?
Thanks again for your feedback.

Hoang,
A couple thoughts...I am not sure how familiar you are with Windows 7 so forgive me if you already know this.During this process, look for a shield icon appearing in your task bar. On occasion, Windows 7 will request additional consent to continue but it does it as a pop-under instead of a pop-up, which makes it easy to miss. It would appear in task manager as consent.exe. This icon will display for a limited time and if not responded to it will silently terminate your install without notification.
If that is not it, then due to another security rule you may want to copy the install to the local machine, right click on the Setup.exe and choose "Run as Administrator."On Windows 7, if UAC is enabled (as it is by default), even if you are logged on as Administrator it does not run with elevated credentials. As Administrator, it permits you to explicitly run certain tasks with elevated credentials. This is a notable change from previous Windows environments.
Hope this helps.-G-
No error messages. The install just stops.
This is exactly what happens....
- Run setup.exe from the network and the installation wizard starts up
- Accept License Agreement
- Accept default installation folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\)
- Select type of install (Typical, Minimum, Complete)
- The wizard disappears!
I tried making a few adjustments and got the same results for all. The adjustments were:
- Changing installation folder to a different location
- Changing the type of install
The installation just stops after I select the type of install. I did notice the installation folder never gets created so I checked the permission settings. I'm in IT so I have admin rights and I also confirmed I have full access to C:\Program Files (x86).
The VBA issue is new to me. According to your response, it looks like it is required after installing Microstation. We're not to that point yet.....
Thank you for your feedback.
Can you give me any more information than "Basically, the install doesn't finish."?
Do you get any error message? What exactly does it do and not do?
There is a known occasional issue with installing VBA. This sometimes requires a manual install after installing MicroStation.Without any further info all I can offer are the basics...Disable virus and malware scanning software.Install with Administrator credentials.
I am running 08.05.02.70 on Windows 7 x64 Enterprise as I write this, and works quite well for me.

Not sure what the issue may be, but I've been able to install and run 0270 here. Where I did throw in the towel was that I couldn't get Bentley Structural to run. Finally gave me the excuse I needed to get the rest of the office to XM :-)
Hello Gerald,
I'm new to this community.....
I saw this thread and realized there may be hope for us. We have been having problems installing v8 2004 - 8050270 on a Windows 7 x64 platform. Basically, the install doesn't finish. We were almost to the point of concluding v8 2004 is not compatible with this platform. Would you mind telling me what you did to get the install to finish? Getting v8 2004 installed and running properly is a big hurdle for us and your advice is appreciated.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks.
Hi Karl,
in Windows 7 environmentm even if you have administrators rights you are treated as standard user and all application you started is run with the standard priviledges. If you want to start particular application with full administrator rights, you have to start it explicitly with right-mouse shortcut "Run as Administrator" or you have to switch off UAC (which is not recommended).
Sometimes it helps to run an application for the first time "as administrator", so the application can set all folders, files etc. and for the further use standard rights are enough.
Jan
Is there any particular reason what you are not going to the current MicroStation V8i? As Jan mentions, that is the first release that we certified for use and support on Windows 7 x64.
Christina
are you running V8 on window 7 64 bit with out too many problems I just got a new computer and
any tips would be great
Karl
I Have full Adminstrator rights, at the very least I would like to Run the latest version of XM I can do without v8 for now if possible
I think the only correct solution is to move to at least MicroStation V8i SELECTseries 1. If you will stay with any version that is not certified for Windows 7 64bits, it is up to you to tweak MicroStation and/or Windows and to hope it will run without problems.
Do you start MicroStation with user priviledges or "as administrator"?
Regards,
I am but running it to problems with reading my interface, Its not showing up?? also my text edit tool seem to crash and delete the text seems odd
what do I need to do to run v8 on window 7 64 bit station
Jon Summers: Christina: I was wondering if anyone had experience with installing/running Microstation V8 2004 on Windows 7, 64-bit. Bear in mind the graphics requirements of MicroStation V8.5 and earlier. They use OpenGL graphics, which requires for best performance a graphic card that supports that standard. OpenGL is not used by many applications outside the CAD and modelling world (nor is it by MicroStation XM and later, which use DirectX). You just need to check that the graphics card in your shiny new Windows 7 computer supports OpenGL. Regards, Jon Summers LA Solutions

OpenGL is not a dead standard and is not being removed from graphics cards and their drivers, so unless the topic starter has bought some obscure and highly flawed brand graphics card, this check is not really needed. I also think you will find it has quite a large application base, especially on non-Windows envirornment.
Wow. Thank you both for the information, insight and great ideas. Very helpful and exactly what I was looking for!
Good advice Jon.
Christina, I would also like to add that you should look at the other various discussions about using 64-bit OS. One very common issue is the (x86) decoration that Microsoft places on the "Program Files (x86)" folder on 64-bit OS. MicroStation itself runs fine in that location, however numerous other apps and dependencies may not. For example, many database clients, especially older Oracle drivers, will not function properly with an application installed into that location. Meaning, regardless of where the Oracle client is installed, any application that uses that driver may have issues if the application is installed into the default "Program Files (x86)" folder. The simple solution, is to create a top level "Apps" folder or something like that and install your 32-bit applications there when it is an option. Once I started doing that, the vast majority of my issues with 32-bit apps on 64-bit OS went away.
That is good news! Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it.
That is one configuration I use. As a general rule, I have had no MicroStation related adverse performance issues I can think of. It pretty much runs great for me. Interestingly, v8i which is certified for Windows 7 is affected by a couple things that V8/2004 isn't. Not to say that there are not some issues, however I believe they are firmly Windows 7 issues and not MicroStation. For example, with every "new and improved" version of Windows, it will always be slower than previous version.
Hi!
I was wondering if anyone had experience with installing/running Microstation V8 2004 (version 08.05.02.55 or higher) on Windows 7, 64-bit. If anyone has, would you also be able to include any issues that you have encounterd performance wise?
Thank you!
