Thanks Bear for this.
Meanwhile I coincidently ran into the more detailed help topic for i-models. MicroStation V8i Select Series 1 can publish i-models, that is snapshooting the current DGN/references content into a single DGN container and secure it against write operations. Also can contain non-graphical business data from applications, to be read without those applications and without the need to access the original workspace and external databases.
It can be opened with any DGN reader. Purpose is for project communication and review (but no redlining or commenting AFAIC).
Maybe that is the answer to users compaints like "ProjectWise Navigator uses DGN's now and DGN's can be manipulated". Now you can publish without format conversion, but read only by definition.
Would this be a correct overview for the function as implemented in MicroStation?

i-Model Composer is currently in Beta. Not sure how much I can release, but:
ProjectWise i-model Composer V8i (SELECTseries 1) is a new desktop application used for creating i-models from data generated by design applications. The application is part of a suite of applications, which make up Bentley's new design review offering known as Dynamic Review for Models. Though i-models can be used for many purposes within a federated information workflow, in the context of dynamic review, they are used primarily for design review purposes. Other applications within the Dynamic Review for Models suite, such as ProjectWise Navigator and Bentley View, provide the design review capabilities, including real-time navigation, item browsing, query and review, markup and commenting. These applications generally operate on the i-models generated by ProjectWise i-model Composer. The following outline identifies various key features delivered in this release of ProjectWise i-model Composer V8i (SELECTseries 1).
V8i7 can generate i-models. What are i-models technically and strategically? How can (non-microstation) users open an i-model? What are the benefits special to i-models?
Neither Google nor wiki's give me an idea ...
