Problem
The raster image previously placed in my design file is no longer displaying. Only the outline of it displays. It is suspected that network performance may be a factor with the display of these rasters.
Solution
You can improve the performance of raster handling within MicroStation by specifying the location to store cached files.
This can be achieved by using both MicroStation and Windows variables. Within MicroStation go to the Workspace Configuration tool available under:
> Workspace > Configuration
You will need to add the following MicroStation configuration variable by clicking on the New button.
Variable: MS_RASTER_LOADMODE
New Value: 3
This will cause cache files to be created in the windows temp folder unless the HMRTempDirecory variable has been set.
If you are using the Loadmode configuration variable to cache the images you will need to ensure that you have plenty of hard drive space on the partition that contains the Windows temp folder.
You can control where MicroStation caching is performed locally by creating a Windows variable called HMRTempDirectory. You can use this variable to define a specific location on your hard disk where caching is performed. To achieve this, firstly create a local directory (eg C:\RasterCache\).
Then, from your desktop right click on the ‘My Computer’ icon and select ‘Properties.’ From the ‘Advanced’ tab, select ‘Environment Variables.’ This can also be set from the Control Panel under the following menu.
> Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Environment Variables
Create a new System Variable called ‘HMRTempDirectory’ and define the location to the previously created location.
The HMRTempDirectory variable allows you to set the directory containing the cached files to something other than the Windows temp folder.
Make sure you reboot your computer after defining this last system variable.
