Problem

Position mapping is not working. The Position Mapping Aids (letters) are grayed out.

Solution

Make sure Position mapping is enabled and that the focus as at "Home" (press ESC).

To enable Position mapping in MicroStation V8i (Select Series):
1. From Menubar, go to Workspace > Preferences [Preferences dialog opens]
2. Go to "Position Mapping" Category
3. Enable "Use Position Mapping"

If the focus is NOT at "Home" the position mapping will not work and the Position Mapping Aids will be grayed out.

Here is the difference when focus is at "Home"

To see where the focus is, view the status bar (bottom of screen) for the focus indicator which is shown in the second square from the lef side of the status bar. There should be 1 of 3 different icons:

House icon = Focus is at Home

Accudraw Compass icon = Focus is in Accudraw

Wrench icon = Focus is with the tool settings
