Potential file corruption and loss of data when Using Windows XP Clients with Windows 2000 Server.

Description

Microsoft has found and fixed a serious problem that can permanently corrupt files that are edited over a network. The problem exists only when using MicroStation and other programs from a Windows XP client with Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed, editing files residing on a Windows 2000 Server. This problem affects all versions of MicroStation, including MicroStation/J and V8.

Once a DGN file becomes corrupted from this error, it often becomes unusable and must be restored from a backup.

Resolution

The problem can be resolved by installing Service Pack 4 of Windows Server 2000.
