Overview

To fix unit conversion issue for specification database in OpenPlant Specification Generator.

Problem Description

While performing unit conversion operation using OpenPlant Specification Generator, spec records from one unit to another is not converting properly. For example, performing unit conversion of a spec from metric unit to mix metric doesn’t convert component records to mix metric for elbow records. Refer below snapshot.

Source spec database record, metric project unit.

Target output spec database record after conversion to mix metric project unit.

Notice that, in converted spec database main & run size records are not converted to inches’ records.

Reason

For unit conversion from one unit to another unit, OpenPlant Specification Generator search for project unit suffix for metric unit from source database records & as per definition converts it to defined project unit. Unit conversion issues occurs when source spec database don’t have project unit suffix for component records. Modifying source database records to correct project prefix will solve issue here. As shown in above image, unit conversion has not carried out properly due to incorrect format of records for main size & run size in target spec database. Since target spec database is of metric project unit then records must contain suffix as “mm” after records. Below wiki article will explain about necessary changes to fix unit conversion issue.

Steps to Resolve

Note: Basic Knowledge of Microsoft Access is required

  1. Using Microsoft Access, open source spec database record.
  2. Navigate to concerned table, here Elbow table.
  3. Search for main Size & run Size fields & modify all records of main size & run size as shown below.

  4. Save all the changes & run unit conversion operation as explained below.
  5. Launch OpenPlant Project Administrator.
  6. From left window pane select your metric project, here OPModeler_Metric project.
  7. Go to Tools tab & click on Specification Generator icon to launch.

  8. From OpenPlant Specification Generator window, hit shortcut key Ctrl+ U or from file menu select File > Unit Converter to open Unit Conversion Utility window.

  9. In Unit Conversion Utility select Source Unit as Metric & Target Unit as Mixed Metric. Refer below image.

  10. Click on Add > Select Files to select source spec database files for unit conversion, as shown below.

  11. Select source spec database from your storage & hit Open.

  12. In Output Directory pane, click on Browse button & select a location/directory for output/target converted spec database.
  13. Once done, check on Repair SysIDs & hit Convert to start unit conversion operation.

  14. Inspect the converted output spec database to verify the unit conversion. Refer below image.
