UK Design settings

For both Horizontal & Vertical design i have found that there a two different methods (Horz. - Chords & Arcs, Vert. - Parabolic & Circular)

Can anyone tell me what is best to use for the UK (Network Rail) designs and what the differences between them are?

Thanks

  • I would doubt that Network Rail uses chord definition for horizontal alignments (i.e. chord definition is generally used by US freight railways, where the circular curve is defined by degree of curve and where they use a 100 feet chord, rather than a 100 foot arc for that definition and for stationing).

I have see both parabolic and circular vertical curves from UK users.

I would suggest investigating the latest Track Design Handbook from Network Rail. And if you still have questions then ask a representative of Network Rail
