Can you add a note to the ALG file?

Hi all

Is there anyway of adding a note to the .alg file?

I have a theoretical 2 line railway which I have designed, I often add notes on the model for various reasons, sometimes it is a note to describe something etc.

The problem is that every time I delete the contents of the model I always accidentally delete the notes.

Is there anyway of adding the notes to the .alg file so that once added I can view/recall the notes at time???

Any help will be much appreciated.

  • You can't add note on the ALG but a description either on the geometry project and the alignments. You can create COGO points and use the description to fill the information. You can also use MicroStation text you place on a dedicated level that you lock. If a level is locked then you can place elements on the level but you can't delete them. it will prevent you to accidentally delete the annotation.

  • Hi Stewart and jpln,

I think this is a very innovative idea and should be sent to Bentley development group as a Change request, since Bentley has chosen to keep the alg-structure for the RailTrack Program.

Nowadays the contractors are more and more inclined to use the native design data (like alg) directly, which requires the project are designed into "Objects", this is also the truth for alignments. Not just "notes" but as algs are already a "database", it should be fairly easy to add the capabilities to contain other metadata based on sections (from/to chainage), such as type of sub-/superstructure, type of work etc. etc. The drawings (styles) should be predefined to be correpondent to these differences.

Hope other RailTrack users also can see the added values for a more "intelligent" alg file and would like to comment in this discussion.
