Different Ways To Import Geometry

Question

Hi all 
 
 I was wondering if someone help with the following:- 
 
 I have created a new geometry projected (called Burrows Lane ) and imported the existing rails from a survey via the Import Geometry command (From Graphics Tab). 
 
 The rails are shown in under the Burrows Lane Geometry Project. 
 
 Now if I right click on my geometry project select New and than from the Geometry Tab select Horizontal Alignment for example and give it a name & description &ndash; What does this create??? What exactly is the software doing???

I this question is a little strange but I cannot understand what the software is doing??? 
 
 Can anyone help?

It does create an "empty box" ready to received geometric elements, regression points and/or childrens: vertical alignments, cant alignments.
