can anyone help me with designing a  column resting on a beam.  actuallly i need to erect a column in between the span of a  primary beam running on two regular grids, so that i can have a lifted slab for my water tank.

thank you

I enclose a sketch plan showing many floating columns on a beam as suggested by Mr. Rangarajan. Please see the sketch plan. What I feel that behaviour of the beam- column with many floating columns will change and the columns may behave as a source for transferring load from the upper floor beam  to the lower floor beam more or less like UDL.The columns will go to stiffen the structure and help the frame in resisting lateral force in the direction of beam supporting the columns. This will be very similar to infill wall. The structure will become composite in the portion where the so called floating columns are resting

I have not found any support to my above statement in any Text book becuse Text books mostly deal with usual and routine cases. My strong perception is that the structure will behave in the manner described above.

I shall be very very obliged to the person who adduces a contradictory view so that smoke is clear of my perception. Earlier the better.
