section properties

Hi all,

my query is regarding section properties.

If i want to add a new section using modify section propeties,What all the parameters required? I am little confused how the coordinates are considered.what does ct,Zx,Zy values represent? If  Z is the major axis,There is no Zz value but Zx is given.

kind regard,

Babu

    hi chris,

Sorry for not mentioning the software.I am using staad pro V8i. My query is regarding the section properties in staad.

    kind regards,

    Hi Babu,

I see what you are referring to now in the Section Database Manager.

Zx refers to the plastic section modulus about the strong axis.  STAAD refers to this as the z axis, AISC refers to it as the x axis.

Zy refers to the plastic section modulus about the weak axis.  STAAD and AISC both refer to this as the y axis.

I am not immediately able to correlate the value Ct with a section property in the steel manual, but I will look into it further and get back to you on that one.

    Cheers,

    Chris

  • Zx is the plastic section modulus about the Z axis. Logically, this term should have been called Zz.
Zy is the plastic section modulus about the local Y axis.

If the section that you are trying to add is I-shaped, then, Ct is the distance along the local Y axis from the top of flange to the CG of a T-shape which can be cut from that I shape. If a T shape cannot be cut from that I shape, set Ct to zero.

If the section that you are trying to add is a channel, then, Ct is the distance from the outer edge of the web to the CG of the section, along the local Y axis.

Thank you so much for your reply.

For calculating the ct value,do we require to cut the secton at the centre of the I section?

    You asked :

For calculating the ct value, do we require to cut the secton at the centre of the I section?

    Answer :

Yes. Please see the attached figure.
