Should there be a Job Posting Forum?

I was talking with Todd at SCDOT about his post for a ProjectWise Admin here in the Everything Else forum.  I suggested that he should have posted his request on the ProjectWise forum as that is where I would expect to see it.  Todd told me that he did post the notice on the ProjectWise forum but that it was moved here after a day or so.  That surprised me.

Maybe I'm a bit odd, but I probably visit the ProjectWise forum a few times a week, or a few times a day if I'm waiting for a reply.  I'm lucky if I jump over to the Everything Else forum once a month.  Maybe that's because ProjectWise is a little "out there", even within the Bentley community which in itself is a little "out there".  I'm sure there are many Bentley applications that are somewhat segregated and where admins of those applications tend to be singularly focused within their forums.

The sad fact is that Todd's ProjectWise Admin position posted in this forum only generated one reply.  I don't think that is representative of the ProjectWise community and/or the current economy.  There simply must be more that one ProjectWise admin within our community looking for work.  I'm also somewhat sure that you could replace the word "ProjectWise" with 50 other Bentley applications and the same would be true.

All this to say that perhaps it would be beneficial to create a forum that would have both job openings and jobs wanted.  I don't know the first thing about Autodesk's community, but it took me all of 2 minutes to go to their site and find dozens of job positions under their Classified forum.

In this historically poor economy I would like to see this community do everything possibly to match unique Bentley skills with open job offerings.  I understand that Bentley doesn't prefer granular forums, but I think in this case it can only help in these difficult times.

If things get any worse at WSDOT, I might appreciate the effort first hand...

  • Sticking to the original topic, Scott, we hear you... we really do. Your post does bring up a very good point -- how to communicate information to you that you might be interested in. There are various ways to do that now (some of them have been discussed, blogged about, and covered extensively on this site) and there are others that are coming (in fact, if you happen to be going to Be Together, I may be showing some of that in the LiveZone... wink, wink, nudge, nudge :)

The intent of the "main" areas (e.g. Solutions, Products, Bentley Programs, Communities, Help, etc.) of Be Communities is primarily to help organize information by context more than by subject matter (e.g. Product-related technical content in the Products area, Solutions-related content in the Solutions area, etc.) Care is made to NOT be draconian about this and provide flexibility to "go with the flow", so to speak, when the need to do so becomes obvious (with a good helping of commonsense thrown in, too :). Granted, what constitutes context and subject may seem subjective to some, and some may express "who moved my cheese" surprise, but trying to do both often ends up with confusion (I ask that you trust me on that one, as I personally see it numerous times every day).

The idea of having a "Classified" community has merit, although full disclosure, we did originally have that in the original design for the site and decided not to do it, at least until there was necessary and sufficient reason for it (remembering the above "flexibility" aspect). That said, we believe there are very good, established ways to "connect people with jobs", and are looking into various options there.

AFA the number of replies to any particular posting are concerned... that is something that can often be misleading. Some folks shy away from contributing in public arenas (something else that I have experienced a good deal of). This can be ESPECIALLY true in instances where job-related inquiries are involved -- I think you might understand the reasons why.

  • Phil:  glad you are showing something at LiveZone.  Is what you are showing advertised?  Is it a session or impromptu gathering?  Where would I find information on it?

    Thanks,

    Shawn

  • Just for clarity, I understand that Todd only received one job application from his post on this forum.  That's what I was referring to when I said that there should be more interest in a P/W admin job opening from this community.  Especially a job opening in beautiful South Carolina.

Thanks for the consideration Phil, I wish I was able to attend BE this year but our state still has travel restrictions.  For now I'm blessed to still be employed.

This particular "thing" is unadvertised (there are a number of reasons for that). It is not a session, just "showing some work-in-progress" to those who stop by.

  • We currently have a job opening for a Mechanical Designer. In the past, we have always had to hire Mechanical Designers with AutoCad experience. We then have to train AutoCad designers to use Microstation which can be difficult to change a designers methods when, the are so use to another application. This leaves the new employee and employer in a difficult situation.

Having a web site that can bring specific job seekers with specific job software application requirements is beneficial to both parties not, to mention another method in promoting Bentley software for both parties.

It has always been difficult finding experienced Bentley software users.

  • I would be interested in a Job Posting Forum as well. We have several openings for infrastructure (roads, bridge, rail, etc.) engineers and designers with Bentley experience (InRoads, InRail, ProjectWise, BentleyBIM, etc.). If anyone is looking, especially if  they are interested in living in Canada, please send me an email. Some of our openings are on our web site but not all. Thanks
