Does
Design History
really increase the file size two-fold?
Keith Bentley
provides this excellent explanation:
Suppose you take a 500K file and enable Design History. Your file will immediately double in size
for the first commit, since your file now will have two copies of every element: the
live
state and the
history
state. At this point your file is 1MB. Now let's say you edit the file and modify 10 elements and perform a Design History commit. The new file will be 1MB + 10 elements which might add up to 1.01MB.
As a general rule of thumb, enabling Design
History will increase your disk size of your DGN's by a factor of 2.5. Note that 2.0 is a minimum since each element is always stored at least twice; once in the
live
state once in the
history
state. The 0.5 is an average amount of "churn" over an average project lifecycle.
