For the fifth consecutive year, I am pleased to announce that Bentley will co-sponsor the Student Steel Bridge Competition.
This competition allows students to apply their Engineering education, in a practical test of their skills in steel design, fabrication, scheduling, and management. The epitome of fun through applied learning, the competition also provides valuable experience working as part of a design team.
Along with our continuing financial support of the National competition, Bentley’s Be Careers Network is pleased to once again offer participating ASCE student chapter steel bridge teams the following:
Free software (STAAD.Pro V8i and Structural Modeler V8i) for the duration of the 2013 competition.
Supporting tutorial materials (2013 document & dataset) to help use the software to design, analyze and document your steel bridge. (We have updated the tutorial and dataset, for this year’s challenge. Students may also continue to refer to the 2011 videos, which have been very popular with the teams! NOTE: Please keep in mind the 2013 Rules & parameters, when following the tutorials--which serve as a general guide for using the software, and may use different lengths & loads than the 2013 rules permit.)
The tutorial materials are available here, and provide a useful guide for anyone interested in an example of the integration of STAAD.Pro V8i and Bentley Structural V8i for bridge design, analysis and documentation:
We will send out the disc with software and license to your student chapter’s Faculty Advisor (if we haven’t already—we have received many repeat requests from steel bridge teams that used our software last year).
Participating ASCE student chapters can also contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if the disc is not devlievered to your faculty advisor within the next few weeks. If you contact us, please provide the following information:
Faculty Advisor Name
Steel Bridge team Captain's name
Full Shipping Address on campus.
Please note: if your school already subscribes to the Academic SELECT program, then your student team already has access to this software, via STUDENTserver!
The 2012 finals at Clemson University last May were exciting, as usual, and I look forward to meeting the finalists at the 2013 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at University of Washington May 31- June 1, 2013.
Best of luck to all the participating teams!
