Bentley Sponsors 2015 ASCE/AISC National Student Steel Bridge Competition

For hundreds of ASCE student chapters, the start of a new academic year means another chance for them to prove that their school reigns supreme—by producing this year’s winning steel bridge!

For the seventh year, Bentley is pleased to co-sponsor the ASCE/AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition. This yearly challenge gives students an opportunity to work as part of a design team directly applying engineering principles, and to test their skills in steel design, fabrication, scheduling, and project management. The bonus? It’s a lot of fun!

Along with our continuing financial support of the National competition, Bentley is pleased to once again offer steel bridge teams from participating ASCE student chapters free software and training.

For the 2015 competition, we offer the following:

  • Free software (STAAD.Pro V8i) for the duration of the 2015 competition.

We will send out a disc with software and license to your student chapter’s Faculty Advisor.

Participating ASCE student chapters can also contact us at academic@bentley.com, if the disc is not delivered to your faculty advisor within the next few weeks. (If you send an Email, please use a Subject line of Student Steel Bridge Competition Request and provide the following information: School Name; Faculty Advisor's Name & Email address; Steel Bridge team captain's Name & Email address; Full shipping address on campus.)

  • Supporting tutorial materials to help teams use the software to design, and then analyze, their steel bridge. It’s a useful guide for anyone interested in an example of using STAAD.Pro V8i for modeling steel bridge structures, applying load tests, and performing an analysis.

(Please Note: These tutorials proved so popular last year that we’re making them available again. Refer to the Official 2015 Student Steel Bridge Competition Rules, when following the tutorial example—since the dimensions & load magnitudes have changed since last year!)

The free learning materials are available here (simply sign in or sign up!) divided into two sections:

    • Model Generation (videos & accompanying practice workbook)

    • Loading and Analysis (videos & accompanying practice workbook with Dataset)

NEW: We will conduct two LIVE “ask the Expert” sessions, on October 15th, at 10:00 AM & 4:00 PM EDT .

Complete the on-demand tutorials beforehand, and then attend a live Q&A session on Using STAAD.Pro to Build a Better Steel Bridge –for ASCE Student Chapters

Registration details can be found here , and will also be Emailed to your team’s faculty advisor.

Of course, if your school has Bentley’s Academic SELECT Subscription, then your student team already has access to this software, via STUDENTserver! You can use your normal login for STUDENTserver to access the training materials via the link above.

The 2014 finals at University of Akron were exciting, as usual, and I look forward to meeting the finalists at the 2015 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at University of Missouri-Kansas City May 22- 23, 2015.

Best of luck to all the participating teams!
