I just recently read that Autodesk is going to a subscription based licensing model, similar to what Adobe has done. They will no longer sell perpetual licenses after Feb 2016. It also looks as if you may be on their cloud, for file storage and the software but that is what I am unsure of.
Just what does all this mean? Is Bentley looking to go this way too? I am confused as to what I have read about the Autodesk program they are about to implement.
Does it mean the software resides on the "cloud" and you can only access it thru an internet connection? If so, what about speed? and storage of files? These have to be on the cloud too?
Any information regarding this would be helpful.
Please participate in the poll.
Thank you.
Hi Brian,

It was already announced cloud services will offered by Bentley as a part of CONNECT Edition release.

I have no experience with the current Autodesk offer, but when CAD companies talk about cloud, they typically mean data sharing or project management tools, not the software itself. There are some exceptions (like Onshape, completely new cloud-only solution) and I guess the most of companies have tested and evaluated different ways how to use cloud technologies, but at least for Bentley and CONNECT Edition the connection to cloud is not mandatory, but is optional only (and offers some extra functionality and benefits).
With regards,
Jan
