Virtualizing SELECT Server

Hi All,

Can anyone advise me if it is safe and a good idea to virtualize our SELECT server?  Curently it is a physical server, but we are looking at shifting more to a virtualized environment .

Cheers Ian

  • We have Select Server 8.9.3.48 running successfully in a virtualized environment.

We are using VMware. I installed and configured the Select Server software, but not the server O/S etc.

  • HI Ian,

Absolutely!  We test with virtural machines and SELECT Server OnLine runs in a virtural envirnment.

  • Hi there

And does somebody now if it is possible to virtualize MicroStation? How do we have to licence it then?

    Regards
    Marcus

  • Hi Marcus,

It really depends on how the implementation is done. If you are simply distributing VMs with a set configuration (for consistency), as long as each VM has its own virtual machine name, you should be fine. However if your intent is to centralize MicroStation, that is not allowed and I point you to the End Users License Agreement, specifically sections 6 & 18.

    6. NO "MULTIPLEXING" OR POOLING. Use of software or hardware that reduces the number of electronic devices directly monitored or managed by the Software or directly accessing or utilizing the Software (sometimes called "multiplexing" or "pooling" software or hardware) does not reduce the number of licenses required; the number of licenses required would equal the number of distinct inputs to the multiplexing or pooling hardware/software "front end."

    18. NO AUTOMATED USE. A license for the Software may not be shared or used concurrently on different Devices, nor to support multiple User or operational requests as indicated above. As a result, you may not use the Software in an automated, unattended, non-interactive server application or component (including ASP) where: (i) multiple User requests from different Users are queued for processing; or (ii) multiple requests from one User are queued for processing but acting against content created or edited by other Users. Examples which would violate this Section 18 include but are not limited to use as a plot server, file translator, print server or other applications using or employing similar methods.

  • Hi Steve

    Thank you for the answer.
Regarding the Licensing... It's only a License Problem then? Bentley dosent have a License for Virtualisation?
To me it seems that the development is strongly going towards application virtualisation on a Citrix or VM Ware platform....
