Bentley Hosted Licensing/Remote Licensing for Pre-XM Applications?

Greetings-

I know that with the advent of the XM products licensing took a big jump forward.  It also allowed Bentley to host the licenses for those clients who choose to do so.

My question: what is the best way to host licenses for pre-XM applications?  We have a poject we thought was going to be XM and instead we are being asked to use V8.  We had planned on having Bentley host our licensing, since we have several remote users.  Since we are having to use V8, that may not work.  I'd still like to transition to Bentley hosted licensing; can I use a license file for those apps that would point an an IP address on Bentley's server?  Or do I have other options?  I want to avoid checking out lcienses long-term to users, especially since I doubt we have enough licenses to do it.

Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Hi Jeff,

the licensing systems "pre-XM" and XM are not compatible, so V8 applications cannot connect to XM licensing server directly. The solution for your mixed environment with both XM/V8i and pre-XM applications is SELECTserver Gateway. This service communicates with XM-style licensing server (e.g. licensing server hosted at Bentley) and it transforms the licesnses to pre-XM style, so for older applications it looks like that a former SELECTserver is installed.

Usually SELECTserver Gateway is installed in an office, so XM/V8i applications connect directly to Bentley hosted SELECTserver via Internet and older applications connect to Gateway locally. If there are remote offices, that are not well-connected to a headquarter, just install Gateway in these offices too. In an exterme situation remote people can have Gateway installed on their machines, so in fact each has own pre-XM licensing server.
